New Zines & Zinesters Discord Space

Hello, zine friends!

Today I have a little announcement for you in the form of a new chat space for zinemakers and enthusiasts.

Olivia M of Anecdata fame has created a Discord server for zines and zinesters.

If you’re already familiar with Discord, HERE is the link for the server. Go forth and chat!

If you’re not familiar with Discord, don’t worry; you’re not alone! I started learning the ropes last night, and there is a bit to learn.

What it boils down to is that Discord is a chat-focused space for various communities. While the focus has been on gamers, other people have found it useful as well. It’s the modern version of the late 90s early 00s yahoo chat groups. You sign up for Discord, and then you can sign into ‘servers’ for individual groups.

You can even start a server of your own to have a private chat space with specific people. Or a public one on a topic you like.

It works in your browser, on your desktop, and there’s a mobile app as well.

The whole thing can certainly look complicated and confusing, but I promise that I am learning right alongside you. If you have any questions, you can ask within the server, you can ask Olivia on the aforementioned Tumblr, or you can post questions right here in the comments section.

Now that I’m getting more familiar with it, I rather like it. Let me know if you check it out.

New Zine Podcast: Poor Lass Zine!

Hello, zine friends!

I am very excited to let you know that there is a new zine podcast on the block:

The Poor Lass Zine podcast!

I’ve just listened to their first episode, and I think it’s so fun. The whole thing was very warm and inviting – two friends chatting about their zine series and such. I wanted to pour a cup of tea myself just listening. (C’mon Yorkshire Tea!)

It’s available on Soundcloud as well as on iTunes. (Sorry for not having the iTunes link – I’m not an iTunes user and don’t know how to get to it if I don’t want to sign up.)

ZineWriMo is Coming!

Hello, zine friends!

The month of October is coming to a close, which means a big month ahead for many people. Why? NaNoWriMo, the event that challenges people to write 50,000 words in one month.

So what does that have to do with ZineWriMo? Well, according to the person who came up with it (as far as I know), Kat Mokus:

ZineWriMo is a new idea that came to me in wanting to combine the original NaNoWriMo and zines!

ZineWriMo is November! We focus on making one, or many, zines in November! Our only goal is to create zines, no word count requirement!

ZineWriMo is a fun, relaxed way to get into the zine making space with friends. There is a ZineWriMo Facebook group to help you connect with others, and the #zinewrimo hashtags on places like Twitter and Instagram if they are your preferred places.

Just to be clear, I definitely didn’t come up with the idea of ZineWriMo. BUT what I did do is come up with a little list of daily activities…

Ta da! I thought it would be fun to have daily prompts for any time you are feeling a little lost or unmotivated when it comes to getting your zine on in November. This is meant to be fun not stressful, so don’t get too wrapped up in accomplishing everything on every day. (But kudos and internet chocolates to you if you do.)

So there you have it! Share far, and share wide, zine friends. November is going to be busy!

The Australian Zine Showcase With Sticky Institute at The Melbourne Art Book Fair

Zine Community Crowdfunding Spotlights

I’m doing something a little bit different today because I’d like to feature a couple of zine community crowdfunding projects. If we don’t support each other, who will?

ZICS

There’s only 24 hours left, at the time I’m posting this, and Pozible is an all or nothing crowdfunding site. They’re so close!

ZICS is a not-for-profit collective of passionate volunteers dedicated to connecting local zine and indie comic creators with the wider public. We strive to start inclusive conversations, collaborate on ideas, and share the art forms that we love.

We’ve been working hard since March to make this year the biggest ZICS yet, and now we need your help. As a not-for-profit group, we rely on your generosity to make this event happen. That’s where the Pozible campaign comes in. By pledging just five dollars of your hard-earned cash, you’ll be supporting Brisbane’s largest gathering of zine and indie comic enthusiasts.

Our project is centred around multi-media artist Ana Hine, as she navigates making and distributing her feminist arts zine Artificial Womb around Scotland.

It will explore her experience of dropping out of the mainstream media, due to work-related stress, depression and anxiety, and the role zines are having in her recovery.

The film will touch on:
zines and DIY culture
feminist arts scenes
mental health & employability
We would like to showcase the work of other zine makers who have had similar experiences with mental ill-health. If you’d like to be featured (and are within driving distance of Glasgow and/or Dundee) get in touch!
