#ZineWriMo Day 27: Zinemaker On The Go

Hell, and beautiful day to you, zine friends. I hope the day has been treating you well and that the beginning of your week has been kind.

Create on the Go: Make a zinemaker travel kit

It’s only today that I realised that the prompt could be taken a couple ways. Either a travel kit for yourself or a kit for someone else. Alas, I’d already taken the pictures of my little travel kit, so I went with that.

I got this lovely pen/cil case a couple years ago, and I’m not sure if you can still get it. It’s not available on JetPens anymore, at least.

I love that this case has a handle. It feels like a miniature briefcase and has ample different sorts of storage as well.

The front section has nice pen pockets for bigger pens, an elastic band that I like to keep paperclips on, a small pocket that perfectly fits mini-zines…

…and a little pocket that I use for washi.

The back section has a zippered pouch I use for the pens and pencils I don’t use very often and a flap type of holder that’s great for tools. I only have my small ruler in there now, but it’s also good for scissors and other sorts.

Underneath that is a deep section for other bits and bobs. I keep my most often used bits and bobs in there. I like to leave it open and then I can just take things out as I need them when I’m working on something. (I take it with me around the house, too. Hehe.)

(The yellow thing is a bunch of small sticky flags, and the blue thing is an eraser – just in case you were curious.)

So there you have it! I don’t actually get out much, haha, but I still love this pencil case. Especially the mini-zine-sized pocket. And that’s it for me today. I’ll be back tomorrow!

#ZineWriMo Day 25: Zine Friends & Day 26: Zine Zines!

Hello! It’s the start of a new week and, once again, I’m behind a day. Haha. I can’t feel too bad at the tail end of the month, though.

Because I have a Happy Mail Monday video to come and don’t want to overload email subscribers’ inboxes, I’ve decided to combine yesterday and today. I’ve also decided to combine them because…

Sharing is Caring: Make zines with friends

…I didn’t really accomplish this. I don’t really have any friends (to the degree they’d be able to hang out rather last minute) around town just yet. I did think about doing an online hangout in one form or another, but Wanderer didn’t feel well quite suddenly, so I ended up spending the afternoon keeping an eye on him.

However, I did get to today’s prompt.

Make a Zine: Make a zine about zines!

I intended this zine to be about how to make a mini-zine. How to fold one and that sort of thing. What it ended up being is… a sort of general ramble from me about mini-zines. Bits and bobs about minding your margins, how design is up to you, and that sort.

You can check out a full video flip-through on my Instagram if you’re not clear what I’m on about. I’m still not clear. Haha.

That being said, I love checking out zines about zines, so if you had the chance to make one today, please let me know!

#ZineWriMo Day 24: Zine Wiki Day

Aaaaaand hello again! I am back once more with the prompt for today…

Make a profile at ZineWiki.com or make sure your profile is up to date

This is absolutely a nod to the same prompt that appears in the International Zine Month list because I feel the Zine Wiki is a great resource that more people need to know about. While not all the information is up to date, that’s pretty much part and parcel of the zineverse anyway. It can still be a great way to find out more about various zines and zinemakers.

In fact, sometimes the Zine Wiki page is the only easily found page for some zines and zinemakers. (Says she who tries to include at least one link with every zine review.)

This is my page, if you’d like to see an example without needing to leave this post. Haha. Building a page on the wiki system is pretty easy once you get used to it, but if you have any trouble, you can feel free to let me know. I’ll do my best to get things sorted for you. 🙂

If you have a wiki page, let me know in the comments so I can check it out.

Catching Up: #ZineWriMo Day 23: Celebrate Friends

Hello and happy weekend, zine friends. I’m catching up on the prompt I missed yesterday…

Make a Zine: Celebrate an awesome person in your life by making a mini-zine about them

You can see a video flip through of the zine on my Instagram.

I originally planned to make a heap of these because I know so many amazing, wonderful people – and I plan to in the future! – but I knew if I only had the time to make one today, I’d be making one for this lady. We’ve known each other for over a decade, and she’s just plain amazing.

As I mentioned yesterday, this is an idea I got from Kari Tervo. We’re friends on Facebook (I’m Jaime Nyx there, by the way, if you care to be FB friends), and I saw a while back that she had made a very cool zine for Miss Muffcake about how Miss Muffcake is a really cool person. How fun is that! Talk about spreading the sunshine and making someone’s day brighter.

Did you get the chance to make a zine for an awesome person in your life? Let me know it the comments!

Zine Review: Proof I Exist 28

Proof I Exist 28
Billy McCall
https://bunnyears.bandcamp.com/

Proof I Exist 28 is a quarter-sized perzine printed with blue ink on cream paper about life, family, and the ways we grow apart.

I feel almost flippant trying to sum up this zine – even though that’s what I do for every zine. This zine is one that is so full of emotion that you just know that it was hard for the author to write it no matter whether they say it or not. Does it somehow take away from the experience of the author for me to call it ‘heartbreaking’? Does it somehow lessen the zine itself? I don’t know.

This zine has me thinking on a number of levels.

Proof I exist takes us in a mostly linear fashion through Billy’s life – one of frequent moving, exposure to drugs, and few connections with the few being very deep ones. It soon emerges that this zine isn’t so much about Billy as it is about his closest relationships – his parents and more so his brother.

Billy writes in brief, numbered snippets, a style we learn at the end is inspired by ‘Bluets’ by Maggie Nelson. I’d never heard of Bluets nor seen this sort of writing, but it’s an art form by its own right. Sharing thoughts and ‘scenes’ in this numbered fashion feels almost life flipping through a scrapbook – each having its own little story and still fitting into the whole as well.

Two things emerge a lot in this zine: drugs and Billy’s brother. Drugs play a large role, both in how Billy’s decision not to use them influenced his life and how he perceived himself as well as how they influenced his brother’s life. And the latter is my rather bland way of putting it that doesn’t give too much of the actual content away.

This zine represents not only the stories Billy is sharing from his life but also an important step of acknowledging and starting to release some of the feelings he has wrapped up in his brother and their lives. He admits to waiting to write this even longer because he was waiting to see how the story would end. Alas…

“but this isn’t a movie, and the final scenes of resolution aren’t coming through all clean and smooth like they’re supposed to.”

This zine makes my heart said and makes me wish I could take Billy out for a long, leisurely cup of coffee where he could talk (or not talk) to his heart’s content. This zine, to me, is an example of one of the important facets of zines in giving us a way to process should we show choose to use it.

There is mention of drug and alcohol abuse, but if those things won’t cause problems for you, I highly recommend you pick up this zine.
