International Zine Month 2018 – Day 23 – A Whole New Distro

Hello and happy Tuesday, zine friends! It is Tuesday, right? Haha. I’ve been deep into transaction fees, listing fees, processing fees, and all sorts in various online marketplaces.

I am happy to say that I was able to jump in on today’s prompt (though to be honest I did a couple days early) and now have something lovely to look forward to after all the work.

Yesterday’s prompt:

Order zines from a different zine distro

I ordered from Natalie Michelle Watson – https://www.nataliemichellewatson.com

Technically it’s a shop rather than a distro, but I’m still counting it. I have been looking forward to checking out Natalie’s ‘Drongo’ since I first saw it. Now it’s just a few days away! Eee!

Have you ordered from a different distro (or shop!)? Let me know where you’ve ordered from!

International Zine Month 2018 – Day 21 & 22 – Zine Library Days!

Hello, zine friends! An ear infection has me running behind, but that just means that you get double the fun today for International Zine Month prompts. Hehe.

Day 21 Prompt:

Zine Library Day! Don’t have one in your area? Why not start one?

I’ve never had the pleasure of visiting a zine library. One zine experience I am lacking – and one that I don’t look like having in my new home state anytime soon. However…

I have the beginnings of a zine library! I’m not claiming to know much about running a real zine library or anything along those lines, but I have a pretty healthy zine collection, and now – thanks to True Zine Marin – I have a set of books about zines to go along with it. ^_^

Do you have a local zine library? Have you started one? I’d love to know more!

Day 22 Prompt:

Send your zine to a zine library

So far in my zine-ing life, I have sent my zines to the zine library that is part of Copy and Destroy. It being local helps with the postage costs. But I do hope to send my zines to more libraries.

However, my list of zine libraries around the world is very lacking! I only know of:

Salford Zine Library (UK)
Richmond Independent Zine Library (US)

I would love to add to the list, so if you know if any zine libraries, please let me know.

Until tomorrow!

Call for Submissions: Plump the Post

Plump the Post! is a mail art project centering and celebrating fat queer and trans folks–and submissions are now wide
open! Please send plush postcards, packages, enveloped things, curiosities, and all other miscellany that can be mailed.

Plump the Post! welcomes drawings, photographs, scrawls, sketches, typographic art, scribbles, fiber art, self-portraits, collages, mixed media, sculpture, comics, abstract art, and any other mailed creation that reflects queer and trans fat liberation, however obliquely. Identifying as an artist is not required, being a “good” artist is not necessary, not one bit.

Submissions will be photographed and shared (with permission, attribution, and obscured addresses) via a social media gallery. In Fall 2018 participating mail artists will receive a zine anthology (physical copy) featuring all contributions.

Deadline: September 19, 2018

Email plumpthepost@gmail.com to get the address for mailing your work or to ask any questions. Please submit, please spread the word, and please plump the post!

This project was funded in part by a grant from
NOLOSE (www.nolose.org), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

Zine Review: 10 weeds you can eat!

10 weeds you can eat!
Urban Edibles
http://www.urbanedibles.org (not working)

10 weeds you can eat! is a ¼-ish size black and white zine introduction to weeds you can eat.

10 weeds opens with an introduction to who Urban Edibles are and about the zine itself:

“Urban Edibles is a cooperative network of wild food foragers in Portland, Oregon. By creating awareness about what is available in our own neighborhoods, we hope to re-establish the connection between people, environment and food.”

There are so many things I really like about this: more time outdoors, getting more in touch with nature, finding more natural, abundant sources of food that are otherwise wasted – and plenty more. This zine is a guide in every sense of the word with each plant – ‘weed’ – given a page to itself that contains its common name, scientific name, a sketch, description, instructions for how to harvest it and its food uses.

If you want a guide to edible weeds, then this is a great place to start. Just when I was thinking this is a pretty comprehensive zine, I found that they’ve included a guide to leaf shapes and a page for notes as well. If you’d like further reading, they have a list of works referenced, too.

One thing I really appreciated – and always do when it comes to zines with food/health topics – is the note on the first page:

If in doubt, don’t!

I think notes like those remind people to think for themselves, double check, and make sure they are taking responsibility for their bodies and lives.

I was sad to see that the Urban Edibles site wasn’t working when I checked it. I’d love to see more zines like this – especially around the world so readers can get more local suggestions.

International Zine Month 2018 – Day 20 – Zine Shop Appreciation Day!

Happy Friday, zine friends! It’s time to get our zine on by showing some appreciation for our fellow zinemakers.

Today’s prompt is:

Zine Shop Appreciation Day!

I shared a list of distros yesterday, so today I’ll share a list of zine shops! This is not at all a comprehensive list of zine shops, so absolutely feel free to list your links in the description. If you do, I’ll not only update the post but include the link on my resources page as well!
