The Thing About E-Zines

digital-zines

I’ve been reading Meta Zine by Davida Gypsy Breier (review to come later this week), and Davida touches on the subject of the changing face of what zines are. For instance, in the 90s, having a zine with an ISBN was to go against that which was zine culture. Zines spat in the face of print matter with ISBNs and told them they should be ashamed of themselves. (Not even close to quoting Davida’s words, by the way. Davida has a more mature writing style than yours truly.)

In more recent times, some zines have grown an expanded to a point of needing ISBNs. Where zines were the answer to an inclusive mainstream publishing machines back then, the ease of self-publishing these days means ISBN’d productions can still be the answer to traditional publishing now.

So where do e-zines fit in all this?

Davida mentions our mutual desire of reading more international zines but postage making it difficult to do so. It seems only natural that PDF versions of zines rise up in answer to this call, and yet… PDF zines, online zines, etc seem to be to the modern zinemaker what ISBN’d creations were to the 90s zinemaker. I have seen smug disgust thrown at them amongst comments of how e-zines are ruining zine culture.

But are they?

I would say no, but I’ve struggled with the question. In this zine, Davida brings up the facet of intent when it comes to the creation of a zine as well as the parallels between zinemakers now and those 20 and more years ago.

The zinemaker now may have something to say but not the means to say it in modern media. Sound familiar? The zinemaker now can’t afford to make [an ISBN’d creation accepted by mainstream publishers/physical copies of the zine], so the zine maker uses the means available – [cut and paste/a computer] – to make the creation and distribute it through [postal mail/email].

Sound familiar?

Davida does a much better job of illustrating the parallels, but when you look at the intent of creation along with the means by which the creations are made, you find things to be… rather interchangeable.

The picture above features the digital section of my Etsy store. After receiving a few comments about shipping, I decided that PDFs were a whole lot better than not being read at all. Some people scoff at others for selling digital media, but I now can’t help but think of how some people must have scoffed at those wanting a dollar or two in exchange for their few pieces of photocopied paper.

I often feel like a hypocrite, as I only review physical zines (for now) but I still sell digital ones. I feel mostly justified, given the stack of physical zines I have yet to review. But there is still that niggling bit that wonders if I don’t also have some of the deep-seated prejudices that have come with stepping into the zine community at this point of its evolution.

I haven’t put up this post to provide answers or even step on a soap box as such. More that I’m thinking a lot about this, and I’d be interested to read your thoughts if you have some to share. Is the digital somehow less than the physical? Is that only applicable in the terms of media – be it books, music, zines? Is it only about words? Is it strange we’re seemingly more okay listening to thousands of songs on our mp3 players rather than carting around tapes or CDs and yet have this resistance to reading thousands of books on our e-readers instead of carting around novels or zines?

Happy Mail!

http://giphy.com/gifs/rainbow-lol-gif-vomit-LwIw5RCH3hwGc

I told you I might need the reminder about doing a happy mail post. Haha.

Actually, things just got a little hectic, but now both Wanderer and Boggin are settled down with some medication that should see them right sooner rather than later. However, a friend is borrowing my light box, so I wasn’t going to take happy mail pictures until I at least had some halfway decent daylight.

On with it!

Cometbus Happy Mail

Woo! My first issue of Cometbus. I’ve heard/read a lot of good things about this zine, and, well, of course I had to get my hands on a copy. Someone on Instagram had checked out my zine wishlist and was happy to send one here to Oz for a trade.

Another person with spectacular handwriting, by the way. Did you all attend a workshop, or…?

Unexpected Happy Mail

Completely unexpected happy mail! This zine comes by way of the US and points to an aspect of the zine community that I haven’t really talked much about – sharing addresses. “I’m a friend of ___ who said you might want to trade.” Fantastic stuff. I love it.

I always send zines back, but the people who send me things like this don’t know that. It’s lovely to see that people are still willing to take chances on stuff like this. Plus, zines!

Many thanks to both senders for making my post box a lovely thing to open this past week.

Done, Doing, Dreaming – Madness

Easter Bunnies

(Okay, so that’s an Easter joke, but with Wanderer and Boggin both fighting the flu…)

I am not a healthy person. I am pretty much stressed 100% of the time, so I get ALL the colds, flu viruses, etc, etc. So you can imagine my surprise (and my wondering if I’ve been booted to an alternate universe) over the past two weeks with both Wanderer and Boggin being sick and me having nary a sniffle. Not only that, I was at Wing Nut’s house along with Kickass, and they both have the flu, too! Yikes.

*knock on wood*

The poor guys are in a rough way today, so I’m stepping up to play carer for our strange little trio, which involves a lot of tissues and running errands. Please bear with me, as I’m a bit all over the place. (And anxious. So much driving!)

Done

*Don’t Call Me Cupcake 5 is done. It’s another stranger one, but perzines are like that sometimes. They can be good for working things out.
*I also have a brand new zine called DAFUQ You Say? (Wanderer really wanted to name it that. Hehe.) It’s a mini-zine that’s all quotes I’ve overheard and written down with no context.
*I am done with the interview questions from Zine Nation. I’ll let you know when the interview goes up.

Doing

*Dear Anonymous 5, DCMC 5, and DAFUQ aren’t listed on Etsy yet, but they will be soon.
*As it’s a new month, I’ll be updating the Zine Review Index as well as a few other pages.
*I’m working on a post series all about the basics of becoming a zinemaker. If you have any questions, let me know!
*I’m also working on a happy mail post for later today. This wouldn’t usually make it on the list, but things are crazy enough around here that I might need the reminder…

Dreaming

*I have my little can for coins and notes in the effort to save up for my badge machine. I’m getting nervous that it’s not a good investment… but sometimes one must leap, yes?
*I’m also dreaming of the possibilities of videos, podcasts, so on and so forth. If you have a preference for a specific kind of media (YouTube, Vimeo, podcasting on the wide variety of sites, Snapchatting, something) feel free to start up a chat about it. Tell me who/where your favourites are.
*I’ve started dreaming about typewriters, but I’m not sure if the reality will be as awesome as the dream due to upkeep…

Mini Zine Review: Read

Read Mini Zine

Read
Chris Graves
???

Today’s review is a short and sweet one for you.

Read is, as Chris puts it, “A mini-zine of mini-reviews OR A taste of some of the things I’ve read in the last month”.

I like that it’s not just text on paper (nothing against zines like that, though). Some reviews have mini-pictures of the covers, and there are little bits of colour here and there as well. I find it funny that the same book – The Lone Wolf by Jodi Picoult – has been recommended in the two book review zines I’ve read. I’ll have to check it out.

This zine does contain on of those things that makes me go ‘hrmph’ – lack of contact/social media. You might make a zine just for you or only for your friends, but you never know if your zine will end up all the way in Australia with someone like me who’d like to see your website. 🙂

The red splatter on the cover is actual paint, not printing. I love that! Anything that’s a little extra ‘something’ added after the printing makes a zine that much more fun for me.

With the blood spatter across the cover and ‘Happy Horror’ as a subtitle, I assumed this was a horror zine. As it turns out, it is, but it’s much more than that…

Ethical Sloth 4 is a collection of comics that takes a horror lens on all too real experiences of sexism, fear, and a lot more. I don’t think I’ve read a zine that was an assortment of comics before, and this was a great introduction to it. I enjoyed the wide variety of artistic styles, from more full page types of comics…

Ethical Sloth Comic 1

…to more traditional panel type of comic…

Ethical Sloth Comic 2

As you may have noticed, the second comic is in German (I believe), so I wasn’t able to understand some of it. But therein lies the beauty of images; I was able to get the gist of some parts.

“Piece of Meat” was my favourite of all of them, as it got me thinking and spun my expectations in just a few pages without very many words involved. I have to admire the ability to do that.

If you like comics, supporting the queer community, and zines addressing subjects like sexism, misogyny, etc, then take a look at Ethical Sloth.
