ZineWriMo 2019 Day 7: Write it Down: Create a Zine Ideas Book

Day 7?! Woosh! Haha. Hello, zine friends, and welcome to another day in ZineWriMo-land. Today we have a fun one in the form of…

Write it Down: Create a Zine Ideas Book

I’m a sticky notes all over my desk and scribbled-on napkins stuck in my pockets kind of woman. However, I do still carry a little notebook around with me most times because you really never know when inspiration will strike. (As I’ve said entirely too many times at this point haha.)

Today’s zinespiration was actually really easy for me not because I already have an idea notebook going (you do NOT want to see the state of the zine cave) but because…

Stickers! True Zine Marin sent me this little lovely that she stickered up for me, and I knew it would be absolutely perfect. I forgot to take pictures of the inside, but there are even perforated pages.

It’s the little things in life. Haha.

I’m planning on adding some more stickers and some washi tape as well. In the past I’ve been focused on just having the notebook with me, but this time I’d like to have fun in creating the notebook as well as writing down the ideas that it will store.

Do you have a favourite notebook? Will you make one for your glorious ideas? Let me know, and be sure to check out the others participating in ZineWriMo 2019.

ZineWriMo 2019 Day 6: Work In Progress Wednesday

Hello, zine friends! Welcome to this, the sixth day of November and thus the sixth day of ZineWriMo. It’s also the first Wednesday of the month, which means…

Work In Progress Wednesdays

WIP Wednesdays are for working toward the goals you set earlier as well as sharing what you’re working on in whatever ways you so choose.

Most of my progress today was mental with a few notes scribbled down on my handy dandy legal pad. I had a therapy session today, so doing much after that was a bit of an ask energy-wise. But these are the sort of days I had in mind when I decided to put together a prompts list that leaned more toward a relaxed way of doing things. No pressures. No stress.

What have you been working on? Have you been sharing your progress anywhere online? Let me know in the comments and be sure to connect with other people getting their ZineWriMo happening this month.

ZineWriMo 2019 Day 5: Warm Up: Oodles of Doodles

Day five! It’s already day five! Eep! Haha. Hello and welcome, zine friends! For today’s prompt…

Warm Up: Oodles of Doodles

Warm Up days are meant to be just that – creative warm ups. Whether it’s something you do regularly or something you rarely do, warming up is the gentle stretching of creativity. Loosening up of the structures we set up for ourselves and a freeing of the creative self.

I imagine how I may sound in writing that, but it’s true! You see, zine friends, I am not someone who doodles. I don’t often sketch, doodle, draw, or any number of different things. However, I do believe in the possibilities that can be unlocked by trying new things, so here we are.

As it turned out, I loved today’s prompt, and it even brought me a bit of nostalgia!

If I ‘doodle’ anything, it’s usually a mass of random swirls and flowers with the occasional pattern mixed in there. When I started out, I found myself actually pretty resistant. Oh, the flowers aren’t pretty, oh does that even make sense, so on and so forth. Slowly but surely, however, I found myself relaxing with the blank page. I let my hand and the ink it controlled wander where it would. Swirls, curls, vines, and flowers… I let it happen, and it was very nice.

But then! Oh, nostalgia!

From swirls and curls I changed to rulers and lines! Did anyone else make these in school? I learned how to do them when I was very young, and I remember I became absolutely obsessed with making them again and again. It had been YEARS since I’ve made one, but when I started, I fell right back into it. Something about straight lines combining to make a curve seemed like magic to me when I was a kid, and it was so much fun to make one again.

Lovely stuff.

How did you get along today? Did you have some fun with doodles, drawings, and or visual explorations? Let me know. And be sure to check out the other people joining in!

ZineWriMo 2019 Day 4: Make A Mini-Zine: Full of Colour!

Hello, zine friends, and welcome to the first Make A Mini-Zine Monday of ZineWriMo 2019! And of course, today’s prompt…

Make A Mini-Zine Full of Colour

I’m not sure what I was thinking when I picked this for today, but past me knew what then-future-me needed today, that’s for sure. As I was finishing up editing the Happy Mail Monday video (to come soon), I was drawing a complete blank on what to do! Colour, okay. But what about?

As it turned out, what my marshmallow heart really needed to do was just get out my markers, grab a mini-zine blank, and just go for it.

I am so, so glad I did.

I love plans, goals, and lists utterly and completely, but the way things have been… Today turned out to be a good day for my soul. I had my colours, I had my blank paper, and I just started making swirls with the colours. From the swirls came ideas. From the ideas came words. And with those words came things I really needed to express – even if only to myself.

I talk and write a lot about what zines can be and do for people, but it’s the moments like these that truly remind me about how important it is that we create. That we make our music, paint our paintings, speak our truths, and, well, make our zines. Finding your way of expressing is a very important step in figuring out who you are.

Until next time, spread a little sunshine.

ZineWriMo 2019 Day 3: Make Mini-Zine Blanks

Hello, hello, and hello! Three hellos for this, the third day of ZineWriMo. And what a day it is! Sunny, big fluffy clouds, cool breezes. Today, I am sitting at my desk with blank pieces of paper for today’s prompt…

Make Mini-Zine Blanks

For this year’s ZineWriMo, you’ll need four mini-zine blanks if you’d like one for each of the prompts – five if you’d like to make a mini-24-hour zine. I highly recommend making more, though. I like having spare blanks on hand because you never know when an idea will strike. Plus they are pretty easy to tuck away in notebooks and in pockets.

Let me know if you’re prepping with mini-zine blanks and/or prepping in other ways as well.

ZineWriMo 2019 Day 2: Plan It Out: ZineWriMo Goals

Hello, zine friends! Is it too soon to think this month is going by too fast? Hahaha. Let’s get ready to roll on with our ZineWriMo goodness with today’s prompt!

Plan It Out: What Are Your Goals for This ZineWriMo?

So technically I more or less covered my goals in yesterday’s post, so today I thought I’d get a bit more specific.

Along with posting to the prompts each day, I mentioned that I’d like to make the next Missive From Murray Bridge. MFMB is my monthly (up until recently) newsletter about life and other zine sorts of things going on. I’ve decided that, because things fell the way they did, I want to do a sort of big bonus issue.

Thinking more on that, I’ve decided on two pages (four, front and back) instead of the usual one, and I’m definitely going full colour. The usual sudoku definitely needs to happen along with plenty of washi tape, too!

I don’t want to plan out too much more of that because making the Missives are sort of play for me. Going with the flow and seeing what happens. So that’s where I’ll leave it for now.

Until next time, spread a little sunshine.

Whether you are participating one day, all of them, taking one prompt and running with it… It’s all good! Let me know so I can add your name (and link, if available) to the list.

ZineWriMo 2019 Day 1: Brainstorms & Thought Gardens

Hello, and happy November, zine friends! Also happy Friday!

Today we begin! It’s time for that glorious ZineWriMo time of year, and the very first day of this glorious month is reserved for…

Brainstorming Day! Come Up With ZineWriMo Ideas

I can never decide whether I like the term ‘brainstorm’ or ‘thought garden’ more, but either way, I love having this first day of the month to scribble down every possibility for what may come. While the ideas need to be honed and shaped, the pure brilliance (and a bit of intimidation!) of the blank page ready and waiting.

As I’ve mentioned, I love the rush of a big to-do list and lots of zine activities, but I always want ZineWriMo to be on the more relaxing side of things. Let’s face it, we’re getting to the ‘extra rough for many’ section of an especially rough year, so relaxation is always appreciated.

So for me? My goals for ZineWriMo are to post every day to the prompts and to get my next Missive out (an extra big Missive because I haven’t made one in a bit). My brainstorming will revolve around what to put into the Missive and trying to manage my habitual urge to do all of the things all of the time.

What are your storms and gardens for this ZineWriMo? Anything particular in mind? Let me know in the comments, and let me know if you’re joining in. I’ll be listing participants at the end of each post so we can all say hi and take a peek at what everyone is doing.

Until next time, spread a little sunshine!

Happy ZineWriMo 2019!

Hello, hello, and hello once more, dear and wonderful zine friends!

The month is all too quickly drawing to a close. That means many things, including…

Happy ZineWriMo 2019!

Thank you all so very, very much for your patience and kindness. I have been absolutely thrilled to see people asking about ZineWriMo this year, and it’s my honour to create a prompts list for you.

Without further ado!

If you’re not familiar, ZineWriMo is the zine alternative to NaNoWriMo created by Kat (@disabledfemme) a few years ago. I am another happy participant who decided to dive right in and create a prompts list as well. It’s all about self-set goals and a prompts list that I hope is fun and relaxing rather than anything stressful.

In Kat’s own words:

ZineWriMo is a new idea that came to me in wanting to combine the original NaNoWriMo and zines!

ZineWriMo is November! We focus on making one, or many, zines in November! Our only goal is to create zines, no word count requirement!

Dive in, join up, and let’s get ready to zine!

#ZineWriMo Day 30: ZineWriMo Wrap Up

Happy Friday, zine friends! And happy last day of ZineWriMo! Wowza. We made it. There were a few hiccups on the way, but here we are.

ZineWriMo Wrap Up: Write/post about your ZineWriMo month

I decided to make a video for my ‘wrap up’ just because I thought it would be something different and fun. It’s longer than I thought it would be and a bit ramble-y, but I flip through the mini-zines I’ve made this month (except for the zine zine because I didn’t have it with me at the time), the other zines I’ve made, and I also go through the list of goals I made at the beginning of the month.

If that sounds interesting to you, here we go…

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ee8Exw27MD8&w=560&h=315]

If you don’t want to watch the video or want the TL;DR, I didn’t meet all my goals, but I had a lot of fun. I ended up really liking some of the mini-zines I made to the level that I will be putting them in my shop. I did put some ‘shoot for the moon’ type goals that I didn’t reach, but I’m grateful for the motivation that just the possibility of achieving them provided.

Thank you to everyone who participated no matter how you participated. I hope you had fun despite the stresses of your November. I’m wishing you all the best and hope you’ll stop by the other participants.

Until next ZineWriMo!
