International Zine Month 2017 Day 10: Care Packages!

Send a care package to a zine friend

Oh, my gosh. Who doesn’t love a care package? Little bits and bobs someone puts together just for you to surprise you and make you feel good. Lovely.

Funnily enough, I’m putting together a little somethin’ somethin’ for a zine friend, but I can’t really give the details because he reads the blog! Hehe. So what I thought I would do is put together a little list of fun option if you want to make a ziney care package for a ziney friend.

*Zines (of course)
*Blank one-page zines (an invitation to create, yes?)
*Pens, pencils, and other fun things to write with
*Sharpies (because they warrant they’re own line in this list)
*Washi/paper/patterned tapes
*Glue sticks/double-sided tape (I have a sweet love for the double-sided tape, but I know some love glue sticks)
*Stickers
*Clippings of words/images from magazines/newspapers
*Treats/snacks (this can be tricky, so you may only want to do it if you’re familiar enough to know about any allergies or preferences) Snacks are good for a big zine session

If you have any more ideas for what you like to send or what you’d like to receive in your ideal zine care package, let me know!

Happy Mail Monday: Zine Petting Edition

It’s Happy Mail Monday! Who said Mondays can’t be your favourite day of the week? 😉

The first envelope of zine awesomeness is from Bloomurder! She decided to celebrate International Zine Month by getting in touch and sending some zine happiness my way.

If you’re not familiar with Bloomurder/Laura, she is the zinemaker who created the Shakespeare’s Lovers zines. She is also the person I have to thank for encouraging me to go to Festival of the Photocopier 2016 aka my first ever zine fest!

And yes, my friends, that is a Strictly Ballroom fanzine! I’m so excited about that. If you don’t know the movie, check it out. It’s an Aussie classic.

Thank you Laura!

The next envelope of zine goodness we have here is from a new friend of a friend, Charlene from Canada! I love finding a little note tucked in with zines that say ‘so-and-so mentioned you’. I love the internet as much as anyone, but good ol’ word of mouth still lives and breathes – especially in the zine community.

I must admit I’m having a pretty hard time not skipping out on the rest of my work so I can dig into these. ^_^

Thank you!

Thank you to Laura and Charlene for sharing their wonderful zines and to everyone who takes the time and energy to make my world bubble a happier place.

So what’s up with the ‘Zine Petting Edition’? Well, you’ll have to check out my Instagram for that…

I’ll be back soon with International Zine Month Day 10.

International Zine Month 2017 Day 9: Hello, Hello

Write a letter to a zine maker that you don’t know

Another International Zine Month day, and another International Zine Month activity!

I’m going to tweak today’s activity a little bit because, well, I have a koala postcard!

So cute.

The temptation is to write someone I do know, but that’s not the prompt! So I’m taking the chance that the address Maxx of Reverse Cougar Years listed in her zine is still her current address.

If it’s not, someone else can have a nice surprise. ^_^

International Zine Month 2017 Day 8: Flyer Flier Pants on Fire

Make a flyer for your zine to send with trades

Hello, zine friends! Today’s zine task is to make a flyer (or flier), and I must admit I’m going to cheat a smiggle today because I’ve had this flier for a while…

This is my call for subs image, but I also print it out. Anyone who has received zines from me probably has a copy. 😉

I did have a brand newie ready to go for a different zine, but I found something wrong with it. It’s a fairly quick fix in Photoshop, but I don’t have PS on my laptop, and the heater doesn’t work in the front half of our place (where my desktop is). (Yes, my friends, this is my life.) So I’m going to wimp out for now because it’s cold, but I will have a more exciting little call to share soon.

Have you made a flier for yourself, your distro, your library or whatever else? If it’s not subject to a deadline, then I want to share it in my latest zine project! Get in touch, and we can chat about it. 🙂

Until tomorrow!

Zine Review: The Reverse Cougar Years #3

The Reverse Cougar Years #3
Maxx
arevolutionofwords@gmail.com

I confess – I picked this up because of the title. Do you blame me? I did a quick look through enough to guess it was a perzine, but “Reverse Cougar”? That’s a name I wish I’d thought of. The funny thing is that I wrote that note << before I read anything, so I laughed out loud when the zine started off with an explanation of the title.

Along with the explanation of the title, Maxx also starts off by writing about, well, not writing.

“I stopped writing zines because I was told it was selfish to want to share my thoughts, for no other reason than the fact I enjoyed telling stories.”

The Reverse Cougar is a zine that hooked me in straight away with emotion. I laughed because of the title, and then I felt so incredibly frustrated reading the quote above. All the time Maxx had lost due to idiots saying idiotic things! But on that same note, I felt happy and celebrated this zine as Maxx’s return to creating.

Plenty of feels to feel here!

The first parts are about Maxx's career as a female sound technician, something I can honestly say I knew absolutely nothing about. That's what made it doubly interesting for me because not only did I not know about the job but I thus didn't know about the difficulties that came with being a female in the world of sound technicians, either.

In the second half, Maxx writes about anxiety, and the feels were strong for me in this one, too. I identify so much with being on the floor crying uncontrollably. I really loved how Maxx handled the 'then' and 'now' views of things. Maxx does a good job of summing up with enough info but not lingering too long. Everything keeps moving along.

Even more, I loved how Maxx’s writing on anxiety expanded out into a sad but beautiful examination of the end of a relationship as well as different responses to mental illness.

The Reverse Cougar took me to a lot of different, interesting places. It ends on such a sad note, but it's a strong note as well. I’m looking forward to reading other issues.

International Zine Month 2017 Day 7: Postal Week

Make some envelopes or postcards for postal week

Is it already day 7 of IZM?! I’m just barely starting to catch up with the fact that it’s July. Eep!

I really wanted to make postcards for this, but I didn’t have paper thick enough for me to trust it would survive in the postal system. Sigh. However…

Envelopes! Given my paper thickness worries regarding postcards, I now feel a smidge silly making envelopes out of wrapping paper. But the paper was so cute that I couldn’t resist. I will probably have to reinforce them a bit for sending, but that’s okay.

Did anyone else make envelopes? Did anyone make postcards? Let me know!

Zine Review: Botanical Photography

Botanical Photography
Jessica Jane

For me, photography is like art and poetry: I don’t know a lot about how it works, but I know what I like and what I don’t like. Everything else gets lost in wondering what the creator intended…

Botanical Photography is a photo zine featuring pictures of flora around Victoria, Australia. There are flowers, trees, sunshine, and lovely little things that make this state beautiful. I may be a bit biased, but if you’re going to take pictures of nature, Victoria is a great place to do it.

While I do really love photo zines, I felt like some of the impact of the photos is lost in the production quality. The pictures were a little washed out sometimes or a little too dark. I found myself thinking more than once that a little higher GSM could go a long way, but…

Therein lies the problem for me: intention.

Were the photos meant to be a little blurry or washed out? Is this meant to be the mark of someone still learning? Or perhaps it’s all due to the paper and ink used in printing. The slightly washed out quality of the last photo adds an ethereal quality to it, so it’s harder to guess than you might think.

If this wasn’t the intention, the suggestion of higher quality paper isn’t necessarily a simple one. With the zine already at $7, I don’t know what better printing would do to the price.

I really liked the touch of the sewn binding. With a zine that’s all about nature, I may have not really thought about staples, but the sewing adds to the ‘closer to nature’ feel in a way that metal staples wouldn’t.

I love photography, and I like to see a beginning (I think) photographer’s work. I think Jessica caught some truly beautiful shots, and I’d like to see more. But I must admit I’d also like to see it printed in a way better suited to photos.
