Thoughts on Zine Community

A few weeks ago on one of the Facebook zine groups, someone asked people to answer the question what they liked/disliked the most about the zine community…

So Many Zines

The things that I like and dislike about the over-arching zine community are, I feel, two sides of one coin.

One of the most beautiful things about the scene, the community, and the essence of zines is that anyone can make them. You don’t have to meet any particular biological standard, you don’t have to be of this profession or income, you don’t have to have a certain level of education… There is an inclusivity within the zine world that I have never experienced at any other time in my life.

Unfortunately, there is also a level of disrespect that, while I have been fortunate enough not to see often, I have come across. I hate to see anyone who makes zines as being deemed ‘not worthy’ on one level or another by any other zine maker or group.

(Certainly there is room to be made for distros who have certain visions and need to at least try to have a successful business model to survive. I hesitate to comment on distros or models because I have very limited experience with them in general – and none of my experiences have been outside Australia.)

Zines are of such an undefined nature that it allows more people to embrace them in a number of creative ways. It seems to me that some seem to forget that the very nature of zine creation is a condition under which they will almost be guaranteed to find something that they don’t like. That’s part of life.

20160209_164132

To judge someone’s zine and say that it’s not ___ enough to be a zine is a step too far. I have my own lines as to what is a zine and what’s not, but I fully expect people to have differing views. There is a strange sort of quality spectrum in which anything ‘too nice’ is considered no longer a zine by some, and yet there is the other end where creations have been ‘too simple’ to be a ‘real’ zine. ‘Not enough cut and paste’ and the like. A zine is a zine is a zine. We creators are the ones who are becoming self-appointed gatekeepers – even unto ourselves.

I have seen those who have been judged by others and judged themselves by comparison. They think a zine ‘should be’ something and working toward that rather than finding joy in the act of creation itself.

I see people who feel negative about themselves and what they create, and I feel like that is, in part, a side-effect of people trying to proclaim what is zine and what is not. Opinions are welcome. Deciding an opinion is the definition is another matter entirely.

Yet even the very day I am writing this, I am reminded that the positive can outweigh the negative. That even though there is often this ‘we’re all broke’ kind of camaraderie, there is also a level of being willing to give your spare dollar, piece of art, or words to help someone in need. Yes, there is disrespect and fighting, but there are also beautiful moments of ‘let’s do this thing’.

ZineWriMo Update + Don’t Call Me Cupcake 6 Sneak Peek

zinewrimo

The rollercoaster that has been life since… gosh, probably back into August… made me realise that I haven’t really given a ZineWriMo update since I first posted about it. Oops!

zine-ideas-notebook

I’m one of those people who always has so many ideas rather than not any. I want to do all the things on top of all of the things I’m already doing. There’s always something to do. I started my ZineWriMo prep by gathering all the notecards, sticky notes, envelopes, napkins and the like, and putting them into a proper ideas notebook.

I have been working on pieces for Don’t Call Me Cupcake 6, but there has been a particularly insistant idea bouncing around in my mind for a few weeks. When I sat down to dig into zine making this weekend, I found myself naturally gravitating towards creating this zine…

It’s different in size, shape, subject, and pretty much everything else that I’m used to creating in my zines. So, of course I would mess up the pages, end up needing to cut everything and then washi tape it back together so it would copy/print properly.

mini-zine-oops

Oops.

I ended up scanning it into the computer because that was just the simplest way to clean up the pages and make copies. I have yet to make the covers, so this zine is still ‘in progress’. It’s also the first zine that I have yet to be sure if I’m even going to release, as it’s a bit… It makes me feel a bit vulnerable, to be honest. I’m still very glad I made it, either way.

Now, while all this has been going on, I’ve also been working on Don’t Call Me Cupcake 6. I was feeling quite stuck and unsure (no idea why). Whenever that happens in my writing, I go back to longhand. That usually does the trick of getting me out of whatever muck I’m in.

Seeing as I’m running late with it anyway, I thought I would share the very first page of Don’t Call Me Cupcake 6…

Carry On Carrying On

WaterLily

Today is an emotional day for millions upon millions. To say the least.

It physically and emotionally hurts to see so many people who are angry, scared, downright terrified… I feel utterly inept at being able to say anything that could provide even the least little bit of comfort.

After waking up to my Paypal account hacked and my bank account (personal – not the one we pay the rent with, thank goodness) empty, I felt unable to even emotionally comfort myself, let alone those who felt the the entire world just took a dark path.

I debated with myself most of the day over what to do. After all, wouldn’t it be understandable just to take a day off, for crying out loud? Of course it would have.

Even so, I’ve come to the conclusion that sometimes all you can do is keep doing. Do what you need to do for self-care, and keep doing what you do whatever that may be.

Here, that means I’ll be putting up a Thursday zine review soon and carrying on with another Friday review tomorrow.

So why even post this up? Because I want you to know that if you’re hurting, if you’re scared… I hear you. I wish you weren’t hurting, and I wish there was something I could do about it. Above all, I hope that knowing my wishes can somehow give you some small comfort in all this.

Your Zine Is Awesome – Stop the Negative Self-Talk

Yep, your zine is awesome.

I know, I haven’t seen it, but I know it’s awesome. It’s not finished? That’s okay! You started, and that’s amazing. You haven’t started yet? That’s okay! You have a creative idea and/or urge. That in and of itself is wonderful.

Sticky Institute

I’ve said it plenty of times, and I’ll say it again: One of the beautiful things about zines is that they come in so many shapes and sizes, topics and types of materials, colours and cuts. The diversity is amazing, and I continue to be impressed by all the amazing things people think of and create.

Because of this, I feel sad when a creator calls their work ‘shit’ or says their zine isn’t very good. Especially when it’s in comparison to another zine.

20151209_130853

Comparison in the zine world (and plenty of other things) is comparison that doesn’t need to happen – and definitely shouldn’t happen if you’re using it to be negative about what you create. Half-fold is no better or worse than a one-page mini. Stapling is no better or worse than sewing.

The only thing a zine needs to be true to is itself. Beer and Longing is gorgeous with its Japanese binding because it tied into the overall Japanese aesthetic and theme.

But that sort of binding, as beautiful as it is, would have been a bit strange on Instructions for surviving the ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE: In rhyming couplets because the beauty of that zine lies in its utterly appropriate simplicity.

And if absolutely nothing in your zine relates to the next bit because that’s the way you like it, that’s great, too.

20151209_130910

I’m not here to be all fluffy lala about this. I struggle a lot with the concept that neither art nor human can be universally loved.

But I am here to tell you that whether someone likes your zine or not is a matter of opinion, not a matter of fact. Opinion is fluid and flexible – and heavily influenced by the world around us.

20151209_130900

What I’m trying to say here is, in part, selfish. I have this strange affection for looking at the creations other people come up with. I want to know what people bring into the world when given the space and freedom to do so.

The last thing I ever want to see, hear, or read is anyone being negative about their own work, because negativity stops creativity. I don’t ever want to hear people talking about what they ‘should’ do with their work rather than what they want to do.

So Many Zines

Sure, who am I to say ‘I don’t want to see this’? No one other than a person who wants to see you create whatever you want to create regardless of what anyone else is creating.

Pursue your bliss.

Happy November! Get Your Zine On

How is it November already?! I know people say that all the time about whichever month, but maaaaan was October a blur.

As many know, November is the month of NaNoWriMo in which people from around the world pen 50,000 words in one month and get their novel on in a big way.

BUT a novel might not be your thing, or 50k words may not be your thing, or maybe you really want to get your zine on (for the first time or another dance. Well, thanks to Kat, there is now a November answer!

Welcome to ZineWriMo!

zinewrimo

ZineWriMo combines the creative rush of NaNoWriMo with the zine world to create a space where you choose your zine goal for the month an go for it!

At the time I’m writing this, there are already nearly 100 group members, and everyone there is being super awesome about everyone’s zine goals.

Definitely check it out!

As you can imagine…

The Day That Got Away… Sort Of

Sometimes you make plans for the day.

And the world laughs.

Wanderer and I seem to be passing back and forth health issues, and it’s his turn. Today’s errand day and Wanderer wasn’t able to get out and about, so I grabbed Kickass for a day out and about. She indeed kicked ass and saved my ass because I really don’t like driving in the CBD…

I did have some lovely and amazing happy mail come in, but I’ll leave it at this sneak peek of sorts…

<3 Zines <3

Back with a review tomorrow!

Zine Cover Photo Session

Today – well, this morning, at least – we had some absolutely gorgeous sunshine. It was so nice to see the sun again after days of rain and flooding. I did everything I could outside so I could enjoy it until it disappeared. Today, that consisted of taking a lot of photos.

zine-pictures

A lot of photos.

Thanks to LogPoes and QueerContent, I have had a stack of zines ready and waiting for me to take photos of them. Admittedly, some of those are doubles (triples, quads…) in an effort to find the best shot. I have quite a bit of review material to choose from, however, and I am feeling very spoiled.

Of course, about halfway through, my usually camera shy dog, Zenna, decided it was time that I give her some attention.

zine-dog

She even put her head down where I’d been putting the zines without any prompting. She’s stubborn and spoiled as, but she’s a smart one.

zenna-posing

Now it’s time to do the less pleasurable (but not bad) side of things, consisting of picking out the best one of any multiples, adjusting exposure and brightness, cropping, and all the other fun Photoshop stuff there is to do.

Posting Possibilities

There’s something so utterly right about alliteration. For me, anyway.

Ahem.

Calls for submissions! They go up on Saturdays and Sundays here on the blog, and it’s usually only one or two per day.

September seems to be the time of year when people are really getting going with making zines. A bunch of new calls for submissions have come in, and I’m loving it. It is leaving me wondering, though…

How many posts per day is too many?

I want to feature all calls regularly, but I’m aware that some people are subscribed here via email. The more calls that go up on a given day, the more emails that email subscribers have to deal with.

Granted, this is only a potential ‘problem’ for a while. Many calls end at the end of this month, and others end at the end of October. I’m thinking that having a big weekend this weekend for calls for subs will be okay, and then I’ll try to spread them out as evenly as possible while still getting everyone posted regularly.

Still, I’m wondering if I should cap it at three per day. Four? Six? I’m not sure.

Thoughts? Preferences?
