ZineWriMo Day 4 – Make a Zine

Make a Zine: Meet the Zinemaker! Make a zine introducing yourself

Hello and welcome to day four of ZineWriMo! Today we have our first make a zine day. I have seen a few of these ‘meet the artist’ and ‘meet the zinemaker’ mini-zines floating around over the years, and I think they are so fun! It’s a mini-zine, a perzine, and an introduction all wrapped up in a cutie little package. So much fun.

Full disclosure, today has been a super busy rush day, and it was hard to focus even when I did finally sit down with all my bits and bobs to make a zine. Alas, I didn’t get very far, but I got a start, and that makes me very happy indeed. Started is better than not at all. But even if you didn’t start today, it’s all good! ZineWriMo is about encouraging creativity, not stress.

I am so excited to see what people come up with today. Please feel free to tag me @seagreenzines on Instagram and/or leave your links in the comments!

Until tomorrow…

ZineWriMo Day 3 – Prep Time

Prep Time! Fold your mini-zines, get your supplies ready, create your playlists

Day three! Woohoo! Usually by this time I feel like I’m running behind already, but I’m still feeling really good about how things are going and excited to make some zines.

Things haven’t exactly gone to plan today, so I didn’t get as much done as I thought I would. However, I was able to pick up a beautifully minty paper pad that just plain makes me happy to look at for the upcoming 24 Hour Zine Thing zine, and perhaps some other projects as well.

I also did some cleaning out and rearranging so I could use this drawers set for all of my highlighters, coloured pens, dot markers, gel pens, and sticky notes. I got frustrated with them being all in different places, so on my desk they go!

I don’t have a music playlist as such (please share yours if you do), but if you’re looking for an inspirational playlist, I have the Zine Goodness Playlist for your enjoyment.

So that’s me for today. I have some papers to cut down and more fine planning to do. I hope you are having a smooth cruise into the month and having fun already. I would love to see what everyone else is doing to prepare.

ZineWriMo Day 2 – Plan It Out

Plan It Out: Make a Plan/Set Your Goals for ZineWriMo 2023

Hello and welcome to a bright and sunny (here around the zine cave anyway) day two of ZineWriMo. I am so, so happy to have received several emails and tags from people about ZineWriMo and joining in. I’m always so excited to see what people are creating and all the good zine energy happening.

Like always, it’s about a gentle, as low stress as possible zine journey in November. Yesterday was about letting your ideas grow wild and free to see what appeared. Today is about picking and choosing the particular seeds or blooms you want to nurture this month.

While my wild and tangled garden is kept in Notion (and on various scraps of paper and sticky notes), my more extensive notes and things go in a lovely sage green book. I have a decent typing speed, but handwriting will always be for me.

So on to my plan for the month!

Nyx’s Plan

*Post every day (this is my goal every year, and I don’t think I’ve ever made it without needing catch-up days, but we shall see)
*YouTube shorts as much as possible (I’m getting a cold so I don’t want to commit to using my voice every single day just in case)
*Make all the minis from the calendar prompts
*Make my long-overdue 24 Hour Zine Thing 4 (which always takes longer than 24 hours)

Bonus Zines (you never know):

*For the Love of Washi
*Just Because I’m On YouTube

So there we have it! Given my track history with Novembers, that will definitely be a challenge, but I’m really hopeful and excited to get going. I’ll be back tomorrow preparing for all the things.

Until then, please feel free to tag me or drop me an email to let me know where you’re posting so I can put you on the participant list!

Quick Update on ZineWriMo Calendar

So it turns out I am super enthusiastic about blackout poetry and listed it twice! I’ve now updated the calendar, but regardless of whether you do two days of blackout poetry or have some fun making a mess, it’s all good. Enjoy!

ZineWriMo Day 1 – Brainstorms & Thought Gardens

ZineWriMo Day 1 – Brainstorms & Thought Gardens

Day 1 – Brainstorms & Thought Gardens

And so we begin!

Gosh, I am not ready. I feel like I write that every year, but I am most definitely not ready for November this year. I feel like I needed at least a few more days in October, but here we are, and it’s time to get a move on!

Today is all about getting ideas on the paper. It’s not (necessarily, but you do you!) about choosing what you will do for the month so much as opening yourself up to all the possibilities. Creativity is a wonderful thing, and you never know what you might come up with once you start writing down (or typing or colouring) all the possibilities.

I’ve started jotting down my zine ideas in the program Notion. It can take a little while to get used to, but a few YouTube video tutorials later, and I was off and running. I like the versatility of it while also liking that it’s only as complicated as I want it to be.

It’s not a very exciting picture to share, as I want to keep a lot of things under wraps for the time being, but it’s nice to have such a big list. And Notion makes it super easy to pop in there, throw in any more ideas I have, and then move along with what I’m doing. And, in my experience, it works seamlessly between my phone and computer.

Easy peasy – and I’m all about that.

So that’s me for today. I did have to keep reminding myself that I didn’t have to choose today, just write down my options. It made of a fairly gentle but exciting start to the month, and I’m excited to start hammering out the details tomorrow.

If you are participating, please let me know! I keep a running list of all participants all month long so you can check out their posts.

ZineWriMo 2023 is Coming!

While I certainly don’t want to take anything away from the spooky season, November approaches! Usually I’m a little more last minute than I want to be, but I am very excited to have the 2023 ZineWriMo calendar ready and waiting for all your Prep-tober needs. What’s ZineWriMo then? If you’re not familiar, ZineWriMo is the zine alternative to NaNoWriMo created by Jasper (I no longer have any social links for them) a few years ago. I am another happy participant who decided to dive right in and create a prompts list for the occasion. I try to focus on a list that gives a bit of challenge but isn’t too stressful. In Jasper’s words: “ZineWriMo is a new idea that came to me in wanting to combine the original NaNoWriMo and zines! ZineWriMo is November! We focus on making one, or many, zines in November! Our only goal is to create zines, no word count requirement!“ Dive in, join up, and let’s get ready to zine! Feel free to email me at seagreenzines@gmail.com if you’d like me to send you the list in PDF or larger .JPG form.

ZineWriMo ’22 Day 30 – ZineWriMo Wrap Up

Hello, zine friends! A happy summer to all my fellow southern-hemisphere dwellers!

Yes, so it’s technically December 1st and not November 30th, but I still wanted to wrap up ZineWriMo. So let’s get to it!

Our prompt for the day… our last prompt for ZineWriMo 2022… drumroll

ZineWriMo, oh ZineWriMo. How quickly you have flown by…

Looking back on the goals I set at the beginning of the month… Well, it’s not great. A flare up will do that. That being said… I’m actually pretty content. Sure, I would have liked to have crossed each and every thing off my list, meet each goal, go above and beyond…

But not being able to do that, I’m still proud that I’m okay with it all. I used to let my health issues and unexpected life things popping up upset me a lot. I used it as a means to drag myself down. These days, I’m better with going with whatever flow I’m in with life, and better at not being so hard on myself.

All up, I do feel a little bashful at not doing more, considering that I wrote up the prompts list in the first place, but I know my wonderful friends and the zine community as a whole is so understanding and supportive of anyone experiencing anything that throws their life off track.

So big hugs to everyone. It was so great to see new friends and old join in the fun. It was so very inspiring to see the wonderful creations and reflections people had along the way.

Here’s to coming back for ZineWriMo ’23 with even more creative determination.

Until then, there’s still Mini-Zine March and International Zine Month in July.

ZineWriMo ’22 Day 29 – Looking Forward

Hello, hello, and hello once more to the almost-final day of ZineWriMo. It’s been both a long and a short month, but another year I’m happy to have been a part of ZineWriMo in making the list and joining in with (some of) the prompts.

Our prompt for the day… drumroll

With ZineWrimo coming to an end, it’s important to me to keep the good vibes rolling into December and beyond. Like most months for the past couple of years, things didn’t go as planned. But I’m finally getting used to rolling with things as they come, picking out the good spots, and carrying them with me into the next round of this thing we call life.

I’m actually feeling very positive about December. 2023? Oh, goodness knows. But December holds the launch of a new project, some new zines (with any luck), some better weather (with any luck), and some down time for SeaGreenZines as a whole to be able to jump into the new year with good energy and a solid plan.

Yes, I said it. I said the word plan. Haha. I can’t help it. No matter how much they keep being knocked around, I’ll keep making my plans.

While this is a little vague in terms of looking forward, it works for me. It works for the brain fog, the low energy, the autoimmune complication stuff, and life in general. So that is where I will leave it for now…

Please let me know if you’re participating and where you’ll be posting so I can put your link/s on the daily list and other zinemakers can check out what you’re doing.

ZineWriMo ’22 Day 22 – Zine Trade Tuesday

Hello, zine friends, and a happy Tuesday to you! Okay, so it’s not exactly a happy Tuesday as such here in the zine cave thanks to it being a heavier medication day. That said, it’s still beautiful to be here and to be enjoying ZineWriMo with you.

Our prompt for the day… drumroll

It’s Tuesday Trade Day!

In my eyes, trading is a huge part of the zineverse. It’s how we can connect with each other, discover new friends, and enjoy a space that isn’t about money. (No, I’m not going to get on any soap boxes. Only state that trades are fun.)

I love trades. I don’t get to do them as often anymore thanks to postage costs. But if you want to check out my Etsy shop, that’s the best way to see what I have on offer at the moment. Here are some of my favourites:

ZineWriMo ’22 Day 18 – Creative Spaces

Day 18! I’m so not ready for us to be this far into November. And I’m definitely not ready for certain decorations and music to be playing when I go out and about… But we won’t talk about that.

Our prompt for the day… drumroll

On the 18th day of ZineWriMo, we show off our creative spaces. My creative space just so happens to be a complete mess. While that’s life and I don’t mind showing it, part of the mess is arranging Christmas boxes for people who follow my socials. No spoilers here, thank you very much. So I will be cheeky and direct you to my your of the zine cave from earlier this year. Enjoy!
