ZineWriMo Day 3 – Work in Progress Wednesday

Okay, so technically it’s Thursday, but a little catching up never did much harm, did it? Haha. Even if it is a rather boring catch up.

Today we have:

Work on your Work In Progress

Unfortunately, my work in progress ended up being me, who managed to get a cold. That’s what I get for pulling a few too many early mornings after late nights. A lot of rest time later, and I’m feeling so much closer to human again. Now to get back on track!

How did your work in progress go? Some people mentioned they are still brainstorming while others have already picked their focus for the month.

ZineWriMo Day 2 – Plan It Out – Decide on what you want to do this month

Hello Tuesday! We’re certainly already off and running this month. At least, I certainly feel like it. Why did I dislike naps as a kid? I always want naps now as an adult. Hahaha. So what are we doing on this glorious second day of ZineWriMo?

Today we have:

Plan It Out – Decide on what you want to do this month (and how you’re going to do it)

I must confess that I was a touch cheeky with this one. I actually moved into a new planner for the rest of the year on the weekend, so I made myself a ZineWriMo calendar and was already thinking about what I want to do for this month.

That started with an extra calendar in my bullet journal just for ZineWriMo.

The main thing I will be working on – and what I will be focusing on for my Work In Progress Wednesdays – is putting together and finishing Dear Anonymous 9. This zine has been such a long time in coming, that is for sure. A recent submission from a friends for it really lit a fire under me and made me want to focus on getting it done. (That said, if you want to sneak in a submission for it, you have a couple weeks left!)

There is a tonne of other things that I’d like to accomplish this month. However, I’m trying to live by my intentions for ZineWriMo and have as little stress as possible. If it turns out I can do more, awesome. But DA9 is my goal, and I am happy with that.

What are your plans for ZineWriMo this year?

ZineWriMo Day 1 – Brainstorms & Thought Gardens

We are here! I am not quite sure how we got to November so fast, but it has arrived, and it’s time to get our zine on!

Today we have:

Brainstorms & Thought Gardens – Get those ideas going

Off the top of my head, I’m not sure how many years I have been using this exact title for the first day. But I still love it. I love a good thunderstorm, and I love the visual of ideas being plants in a garden that we can nurture, grow, and help spread. The type of garden you have is up to you. Perhaps you are a careful planter, keeping your ideas organised in beautiful, neat rows. Or perhaps you’re a wild gardener, throwing seeds around to grow and sprout where they may.

I’d say it’s possible I have thought too much about this, but I love the visual so much that it doesn’t really matter if I have. Haha.

I have so many ideas for zines! Oh my gosh. A new perzine series, a perzine for what has been happening since Don’t Call Me Cupcake 10, some collaboration ideas… However, there are a few zines that have been ready to start cooking for a while, and I simply haven’t had or made the time to bring them to life. So that might be my focus for the month…

But today isn’t about decisions. Today is all about those beautiful seed ideas and starting them growing in whatever way pleases you best.

Do you have some storms and seeds starting in your mind?

Welcome to ZineWriMo 2021

Hello Monday, hello November, and hello ZineWriMo! Welcome everyone to this year’s edition of ZineWriMo.

I am so excited – as usual – but especially excited because I know some people are discovering ZineWriMo for the first time! Hello to new ZineWriMo-ers too!

What’s ZineWriMo then?

If you’re not familiar, ZineWriMo is the zine alternative to NaNoWriMo created by Jasper (I no longer have any social links for them) a few years ago. I am another happy participant who decided to dive right in and create a prompts list for the occasion. I try to focus on a list that gives a bit of challenge but isn’t too stressful.

In Jasper’s words:

ZineWriMo is a new idea that came to me in wanting to combine the original NaNoWriMo and zines!

ZineWriMo is November! We focus on making one, or many, zines in November! Our only goal is to create zines, no word count requirement!

Dive in, join up, and let’s get ready to zine!

Here’s the list once more if you’d like it. Feel free to email me at seagreenzines@gmail.com if you’d like me to send you it in PDF form.

ZineWriMo is Coming!

ZineWriMo is coming!

November marks the start of ZineWriMo, the zine sibling to National Novel Writing Month. Grab your ZineWriMo list and get ready for some fun zine goodness with friends come next month.

Zine Review: Zines as Therapy

Zines as Therapy
October Stoner
https://www.stonerzines.com/https://www.instagram.com/stonerzines/

Zines as Therapy is a full-colour US-sized half-fold zine about the important and therapeutic role zines can play in someone’s life.

I really appreciated October opening this zine with making it clear that Zines as Therapy isn’t advocating zines as a complete replacement to therapy. Therapy can be an important tool for some people, and having more tools from which to choose is a good thing. Which is also why I love that someone made a zine on this topic.

Zines as Therapy opens with October writing about the importance of zines in sharing lesser known experiences as well as how zines can offer candid perspectives on these experiences. They can be used to share types of therapy (very valuable for those with little or no access to adequate therapy), share tips, as art therapy and more.

October also writes about creating zines as a way to process anger, and that certainly gave me a few zine ideas.

The zine has typed text on light colourful backgrounds, making it easy to read as well as pleasant to look at.

I quite enjoyed this zine. A zine about zines (love) with a therapy focus. What’s not to love? October’s writing style is direct while also adding in perzine/personal content that makes it feel even more relateable.

This is a good zine, and I’d definitely include it as a part of an “Intro to Zines” pack for someone.

ZineWriMo Day 30 – ZineWriMo Wrap Up: Blame It On 2020

Hello, happy Monday, and happy final day of ZineWriMo! We’re here! We made it and, from what I have seen and been told, we’ve had a great ZineWriMo.

Give and take a little. Haha.

ZineWriMo Wrap Up – Write/Zine about your ZineWriMo 2020

With the way this year has been going, I was a little bit nervous about ZineWriMo, but I was also excited to start creating. I knew I wasn’t the only one who hadn’t been creating much – if at all – this year, and ZWM was a great, low-stress, low pressure way to get going.

I didn’t finish the mini-zines, but the prompts proved to be an unexpected kind of inspiration, and it felt so very good to get started.

Of course, the 24 hour zine day was the big day. I was completely unprepared and loved every minute of it. I didn’t finish this either, but I smile so much thinking about this! Everyone was wonderful and supportive, the prompts were awesome and thought-provoking, and it was so much fun.

I was looking forward to finishing it before the month was out but…

Yep! I had to take a trip to emergency yesterday. I am okay and there are a few things yet to be worked out. I have been sleeping in between pokes and prods, but I’m resting at home and will have some answers soon. I’m so sorry about the silence around here.

It’s been an eventful month but, overall, a great one with plenty to look back on and smile. Did I accomplish all the goals I set at the beginning of the month? Nope! But that’s not what this is all about.

I hope everyone else had a great month. I’d love to see what you all did. I know there’s a problem with my comments section here, so feel free to tag me on Instagram and/or email me your blog post links at seagreenzines@gmail.com

Until next time, spread a little sunshine…

ZineWriMo Day 28 – Celebration

Hello and happy Saturday, zine friends. How are you? Did you celebrate Thanksgiving? If yes, are you finding interesting and creative ways to use your leftovers? I’m really missing pumpkin pie right about now. Hahaha. Along the theme of being grateful and thankful comes today’s prompt…

Make a zine celebrating someone in your life

It’s all too easy to go through life thinking that those we care about know that we care about it. They know, right? In the way we check in, in the way we have our in jokes or our favourite memories… But I think it’s also all too easy to forget that we are cared about. That we are special to someone. The kindest hearts are often those bearing the most pain. So it certainly wouldn’t hurt us to share the love a bit and celebrate those who are special to us.

When I sat down with my mini-zine blank, I didn’t have anyone in mind to make a zine for. In previous years, I always went in with a plan. This time, I sat down… and it was the paper that did it for me. The cover is one small part of a 12×12 piece of paper featuring a blurred but beautiful blue sky and stunningly green grass. Then, like that sun shining, the lightbulb went off in my mind, and I knew.

Unfortunately, this one is a bit of a personal variety, so I won’t get too much into it. Like the others, it’s not finished yet. Still, I enjoyed expressing myself through colour, patterned paper, and washi tape. I enjoyed making a zine, but I also enjoyed making something purely for appreciating this person’s completely unexpected but now so important existence in my life.

How did you go with today’s prompt?

ZineWriMo Day 27 – Friday Night Highlights

Happy Friday! How is it the last Friday in November already?! My goodness gracious me. Time flies and flies. Being Friday, you know what’s up next…

Friday Night Highlights – Show off your work in progress

As much as I had other plans for my works in progress, here is the big one! Yes, my 24-hour zine will be a 24(+)-hour zine, and that’s totally okay. This is my kitchen table for the time being. Hahaha. I’ve had to spend the day catching up (and will spend a bit more time doing so over the next few days, but I’m going to be getting my zine on hard to get this baby done sooner rather than later!

Do you have a Friday night highlight to share?

ZineWriMo Day 26 – Warm Up Blackout Poetry

Hello, and happy Friday. I’m doing yesterday’s prompt today because I want to catch up, and I really like…

Warm Up – Try making blackout poetry

If you’re not familiar, blackout poetry is where you take an already established text and black out part of the text to create something new.

There’s something intriguing to me about blackout poetry. I never know where it’s going or where it’ll really end up until I’m finished. For a long time I was actually a bit intimidated by blackout poetry and didn’t do it. What could I possibly create? Would it be easy or hard? Would I love it or hate it?

It turned out I really love it. It’s like unlocking a hidden puzzle inside every piece of text. And you can do it more than once to unlock different puzzles. I know it can feel a bit daunting, but I recommend giving it a go if you haven’t yet.

Have you tried blackout poetry?
