Prep for the Melbourne Art Book Fair Zine Fest

Wowza. So much work to do and never enough time to do it!

Sticky Institute (ardent defenders of zine culture since 2001) has been invited by the National Gallery of Victoria to run a zine fair in conjunction with their Melbourne Art Book Fair, taking place between Friday 17 – Sunday 19 March 2017.

Sea Green Zines will be participating(!) as part of one hundred zine makers Sticky has invited to display and sell their work at the 2017 Melbourne Art Book Fair. This showcase will present Melbourne’s vibrant DIY publishing community alongside zines from around Australia.

The zine fair will be happening in the ‘kitchen space’ between the gift shop and the Great Hall.

(Here is the Facebook link for the Sea Green Zines-specific event.)

Things have been in an absolute flurry around SGZ headquarters as I print copies, covers, and labels as well as do soooooo much sewing and folding.

So much of all the things. When you have seven of one zine series, six of another, and a few one-off zines, even doing a few copies of each one quite quickly turns into a huge stack of work.

Wanderer is so awesome, though, and knows that I will work and work while forgetting everything else, so he kept the coffee flowing. Later in the day…

…he set up a little ‘relax retreat’ in the back yard. <3 That guy.

This is the stack of sewing that I finished at twenty minutes past midnight last night. Ooof!

There’s still a stack of things to do, which is why I might not be the best at keeping up with pretty much every other facet of my life. Reviews will still be going up this week, but there will be delays in email or other message responses.

Aaaaand, just as a little sneaky…

You all know how much I absolutely adore zines, and I am absolutely tickled that Sticky invited me to table at this event. I will have all my zines there for your purchasing pleasure.

However, given it’s the art book fair… I will also have a few copies of my novel, Dark Echoes, there, too. You can get a signed copy for your awesome self. I’ll pop the synopsis at the end of this post. (Yes, it’s the third in a series, but it can be read as a standalone.)

Well, that’s me for now.

Dark Echoes

LONE WOLF

Lily Peterson is a wolf who hunts alone. Haunted by the attack that left her best friend permanently human, she will do whatever it takes to catch her prey.

FATE

Jason North is one of the Neuri, a pack of werewolves with special abilities. He knows he’s never met Lily before, but his instincts tell him he has. He’ll keep her close until he figures out why.

EVERYBODY LIES

A war that has played out across lifetimes threatens to consume Echo Falls. Friends become enemies, and old enemies become allies. Lily fights against memories that aren’t hers, forced toward a fate she doesn’t believe in.

Fate is about to learn that Lily doesn’t like being told what to do.

Calling Zine Makers, Libraries, Distros, And the Like

I’m at the very beginning stages of working on a new zine project. As part of this, I would like to include A5/A6 spaces (maybe even A7, if that works for you) that feature things like:

*Zines that have a rolling call for submissions (even if your zine changes theme/topic from issue to issue, an overarching ‘flier’ for the whole series would be awesome)
*Zine distros – whether you want to say ‘check out my distro’, are looking for zines to sell in your distro, or both!
*Zine libraries – again, whether it’s a ‘check us out’, ‘looking for zine donations’, or both, I’d love to see it
*Zine people who want to be included in an ‘open to trades’ section. I’m thinking name, preferred contact (or your mailing addy, if that’s the way you roll), and a few likes/dislikes.

The key thing here is that things be ‘undated’ (hence sharing a zine series rather than one specific call for submissions) so things aren’t out of date before I get the chance to create the thing.

Ideally, I’d like things to be images with text on them because of the limited space involved (with the exception of the trades section, which will be text only). But I want to be flexible, too. This project is really in its early days, so I’m still figuring a lot out.

If you want to get involved straight away (please do!) then you can shoot me an email (theauthor at inkyblots.com)

A Litchfield County, Connecticut Zine Fest? & Survey!

litchfield-county-ct-zine-fest

Zine fest in the making!

Olivia (creator of Anecdata 1, 2, and 5 – and others I haven’t reviewed, of course) is looking to set up a local zine fest and would like your opinion!

Whether you’re in CT or not, definitely check out the website – https://litchfieldcountyzinefest.wordpress.com/ – that Olivia has set up and take the survey to help give a picture of whether this is doable or not.

These are early days, so feedback is very important to keep the momentum of researching and planning a zine fest going! So if you’re at all interested, fill out that survey.

Notes

My beautiful boy Asimov is at the vet’s, recovering from his third (and final! they finally found the problem) operation until tomorrow, so I’m trying to keep my mind occupied. What better way to do that than with admin stuff?

Here are some updates on site things, shop things and whatnot.

I’ve updated the Zine Videos page if you’d like to check that out. I’m adding more and more videos, and I’ve make a YouTube Zine Video Playlist for all of them if you’d like to check that out.

I’ve also updated my Available Zines page so you can not only see what I have available but you can buy directly from me as well if you’d like.

My Etsy shop is now 100% Sea Green Zines! My previous business name has lapsed, hence why I’ve finally decided to switch over my Etsy shop name. You can now get there by using www.seagreenzines.etsy.com

I also have plenty of new zines listed there:

*Hairy is a simple illustrated zine about body hair caused by PCOS.

*DAFUQ You Say? is a mini-zine full of the weird and wonderful things I’ve heard people say. Taken completely out of context, of course.

*What’s All This Then? is a mini-zine introduction to what zines are all about.

*Dear Anonymous 6 is complete and now available as both physical and digital.

I am very, very happy to announce that Umbrella – A PCOS Zine – is now finished and is also available in physical and digital forms.

That’s all from me for today. I have a lot more to do and a lot more zines to make, so I’m off for the day!

The Good, The Bad, & The Sucky

Hello! I hope you’re having a wonderful day. It’s Australia Day here in Oz, and I know that brings up a lot of mixed feelings, so I’ll mention it and then leave it be.

I know Thursdays are meant for reviews only – and there will be a review later this arvo – but I wanted to post this sooner rather than later.

The Good

I am so happy to say that my PCOS collab zine is taking off, and there will even be a comic in it!

I’ve never created a zine with a comic in it, so I’m very excited to be working with someone who makes them. Telling her story visually will be a wonderful thing to have in the zine.

Also, thanks to a shout out from Sticky Institute, there is very likely going to be more content than I first anticipated. (But please submit if you want to! The more the merrier!

The Bad

This isn’t so much bad as me simply apologising for disappearing Tuesday and Wednesday.

Things are… interesting for Wanderer and me right now (life-wise, not relationship-wise), and we have had a lot to work out and a lot of hard decisions to make. A lot of it is for possibilities rather than things that will definitely happen, but it’s better to make the plans of actions sooner rather than when (if) they happen and a lot of emotion is involved.

Please also forgive my vagueness, but no one wants to hear me prattle on about my woes anyway. We’re all dealing with tough things!

The Sucky

This is one of those decisions that was really hard to make… I won’t be attending Festival of the Photocopier 2017.

While I imagine it’s not exactly a huge thing for me not to be there to anyone in particular, it does break my heart a little. I was really looking forward to it, but circumstances being what they are…

The silver lining to this is that Sticky has a waiting list for people wanting a table, and now someone who didn’t think they would have a table will now be able to.

Anyway, that’s me for the day. Review to come soon.

Do It For the Kitty!

All plans for a normal post today went out the window last night.

I’ll spare you the less than awesome (aka yucky) details, but the medical mystery that is my beloved cat Asimov is back at the vet.

It’s come down to needing a very delicate operation on his throat area (a lot of very important bits around there in a cat) – no other option. We’re hoping that doing the necessary cleaning out and such will also reveal the source of all his problems.

I’m holding a sale on my Etsy shop to help fund the operation.

I appreciate everyone’s patience. I feel like I bounce between ‘everything is awesome’ and ‘EVERYTHING IS ON FIRE WHAT IS HAPPENING’. Thanks to everyone who has stuck with me through all the crazy things that happen in my life.

I would much rather give you something in exchange for your help, but if you feel so inclined, I do have a direct way to donate on my Paypal page. If you want to donate there but want something different to what I have available on Etsy, no worries at all. Just send me a message there if you can or shoot me an email at theauthor@inkyblots.com

Happy Birthday Wanderer!

birthday-party-hard

Today is Wanderer’s birhtday, so please forgive the lack of a standard type post. I have mail to share as well as news, so I’ll be right back on track tomorrow!

If you’re expecting an email response, I’ll be pouring through those tomorrow as well.

Until then – party hard!

Do You Like Zines? Do You Like Writing About Them?

Ziiiiiiines. To know them is to love them. (At least, I think so.) If you love zines, then I have an opportunity for you.

Zine Nation is a site dedicated to ziiiiines. They post up an assortment of reviews most months as well as conduct interviews with various people in the zine community (even with me!).

Zine Nation is currently looking for an editor to take over the blog and smm for a few months. Does this sound like you? Well then get in contact!
