What’s Happening – Nearly There

Hello, my wonderful zine friends. I hope the beginning of this week has (or will) greet you well, and that things are going smoothly for you.

Things are messy here, and I am very much looking to being on the other side of things.

Moving is hell, but I didn’t quite realise the kinds of hell I would experience. Sudden flu as the clock was really ticking. Barely controlling my own mental health and emotions in amongst experiencing some truly horrific as well as truly beautiful acts of humanity. What looks like the death of one, possibly two, friendships. Other friends I’ve barely spoken to for months showing up on my front door and asking how they can help.

I’ve never looked so forward to a proper sleep in my life.

Anyway, enough of my blathering on! What’s happening?

Today is the last chance to pack up all my things, as the moving truck arrives tonight. The big pack will happen tomorrow, and we’re on the road very early Wednesday morning.

Things will likely be fairly quiet here this week. I’ll try to keep things updated here for anyone interested, but I’m trying to be more gentle with my expectations of myself. I do have some lovely mail already to share next Monday as I start fresh in my new space.

I am looking forward to zines once again being the big focus in my life.

Big hugs and lots of sharpies to you all.

What’s Happening?

Hello, zine friends!

It’s only eight sleep until my big move, and my brain is pretty mush! (Who knew that mail redirections had to be so complicated. Thanks AusPost.) So what’s happening!

I’ve had the address up for a few days now, but I’ve put the mail redirection in, so it’s all go now! I won’t close the box until next week just to catch anything coming through before the redirection hits, but that’s not far away now, my friends. The redirection lasts for three months, so don’t worry if you’ve sent something and know it won’t arrive this week.

Paper Currency, my beloved project, a zine about zines, is complete! <3 I made the time to put it together, print, and sew all the contributor copies because they have been waiting long enough as it is. I will launch it properly when I'm settled in my new place.

The same goes for Don't Call Me Cupcake 8. 🙂

I think that's it for me now. Please feel free to remind me of anything I may be forgetting! I hope you all are doing well and have a wonderful week ahead!

This is Why You Have ‘Rainy Day’ Posts

You work hard, you try to stick to a schedule, and look what happens. You sleep through posting a zine review.

On Wednesday, I said:

Barring any relapse, I will be back tomorrow with a fresh new zine review for you.

Well the relapses came in after that.

I have since read (and been told) this flu is a nasty one with people thinking that they’ve finally gone past it only for it to catch up again. I can attest to that with the massive pile of laundry I’ve accumulated due to ‘breaking’ I don’t know how many fevers.

My temperature has been normal for a couple days, but yesterday I thought, “Oh! I can actually walk. Now I can do all the things!”

Turns out I could do very few of the things and exhausted myself very quickly.

As the title states, this is why you have rainy day posts. This is why you prepare in advance. Just in case you get sick unexpectedly, and the illness hangs around – probably because the illness is making you stressed because you only have 11 more days to pack and clean this pain of a house…

I do have plans for a more consistent next two weeks, but we’ll see what actually happens.

Have a wonderful weekend!

New Levels of Exhaustion

Hello, wonderful zine fans!

My apologies for leaving the blog so quiet this week, but it’s for good reason!

We have keys, my friends! Keys to the new post box!

Wanderer and I were up before dawn on Monday to drive the six hours to Murray Bridge. We, of course, couldn’t resist and took a peek at the new place, but it was all business after that as we ran around gathering paperwork, so on and so forth.

Early to bed, early to rise again Tuesday with our house inspection Tuesday morning before the six hour drive back. (The house is gorgeous, but I won’t bore you with the details.)

So I am thoroughly exhausted, but I will be very excited to show you the new space for Sea Green Zines in just a couple weeks!

I apologise if this is a bit all over the place. I am still incredibly tired and my to-do list is huge – including zine-y goodness. I am literally unable to relax when there’s so much to do and two weeks left to do it in, but this too shall pass.

There are new zines to come, the new address to come, and more posts to come. And better writing if I can finally get a good night’s sleep. 😉

(We found a place that does amazing onion rings. More positives for the move.)

Here’s What’s Happening

Woooooo. Wow do I feel like things are chaotic right now. They probably aren’t as much as I think, but it’s hard to see the forest for the trees at the moment. What do I love most when things are feeling chaotic? Lists!

Here’s what’s happening, what my plans are, so on and so forth as they stand right now:

*I won’t be reviewing zines this week. I hate to do it, but my birthday is the 10th, which is Thursday, when I usually put up a review, so on and so forth. With everything going on, I’d really love to relax and not have to think about anything on the day. However…

*There will be a bit of a birthday giveaway to make up for it. ^_^

*I still don’t quite have a move date. The short story is there are a number of things that have to happen in order (A means B can happen, which then means C can happen) before we can move, which is why things keep being moved around and are confusing. Add in a little dispute as well, and not stressing is becoming increasingly difficult. That being said…

*I’ll be setting up my new post box next week! My current post office box is still good for this week and probably next (depending on where you’re sending from – US has been good for within two weeks, within Aus – well you know what a crap shoot that is), but if you send to 786 after that, you may hit the mail redirect stream. That should definitely be fine as well, but it may add some time onto things. If you’re at all doubtful, you can always email me or wait until the new address is up here on the blog.

Oh! I nearly forgot! My goodness, where has my mind gone…

*Don’t Call Me Cupcake 8 will launch next week, ink willing. It’s all about brains and moving house. With some weird things thrown in. And…

*Paper Currency will launch next week! I wanted to wait until I had the new post box for this one, so I am very sorry to everyone who is waiting for it. I am so, so, so excited, though! So much to enjoy along with zine reviews, and a gorgeous cover by Queer Content as well. SO EXCITED.

That’s me for now. Be sure to come back Thursday (or Wednesday, depending on your time zone) to check out the giveaway!

Nyx’s Reviewer Manifesto

A few things that have happened recently got me thinking about reviews of all sorts and the nature of criticism on the internet. When you’re looking at a thing, be it a zine, a book, a piece of art, or even a meal, it’s all too easy to forget that there is a person or are people behind that creation. Especially when what you see – often day in and day out – are variations on the base concept.

It’s also so much easier to be negative on the internet.

When I first started reviewing zines, I knew that I didn’t want to put up any zine review that was pure criticism. If I disliked a zine more than I liked it, then I simply wouldn’t review it. There were and are plenty of other places to get that sort of feedback on your work.

That’s not my criticism of those places, by the way. I think there’s a place for them, and they certainly have audiences. All I wanted for my reviews was to accept faults and preferences while still celebrating that someone actually made the effort to create something.

Google defines a manifesto as ‘a public declaration of policy and aims’. I take it to mean ‘this is where I stand, and this is what I promise’.

I’ve had an ‘About & Frequently Asked Questions’ page (https://seagreenzines.com/about-faq/) up for a while now that covers basic things like what kinds of zines I review and whether I review digital zines. However, I wanted to create something that stands more as a statement rather than an answer to a question.

As much as this manifesto is a promise to you, it’s also a promise and a reminder to myself. I never want to forget that people make the zines I review. People with hearts and feelings. People who, whether they realise it or not, trust me to review zines in an honest and respectful way. If there comes a point where I can’t see the zine makers for the zines (poor way to say it, but let’s roll with it), I want to be able to come back to this and remind myself where I stand.

Nyx’s Reviewer Manifesto

I will not review it if I don’t like it.

I see no reason for me to post about a zine if I have nothing nice to say about it. I will point out things I don’t like in zines, but if I don’t have positives to balance it out, it’s not happening.

I will be honest about my tastes and strengths.

I’ve probably mentioned my lack of knowledge regarding poetry enough to last everyone a lifetime, but it is the easiest example. If you’re not sure if it’s my ‘thing’, you can always ask. I will tell you the truth, even if it means some happy mail doesn’t get sent to my post box.

I will not lie for the sake of money or ego.

This presumes that I have enough standing to even entertain these things, which is hilarious at the moment but worth stating nonetheless. I will note circumstances (production, price, so on and so forth) but refuse to be swayed or pressured into anything other than what I honestly feel about a zine.

I will always try to view zines beyond the scope of my own experiences.

As much are reviews are my opinions, I understand that my tastes are not in agreement with everyone. In this, I will always try to acknowledge others whom I think will enjoy a zine even if I did not.

I will not post pictures of the inside of a zine without permission.

Zines and the internet have not always been on the best terms – and with good reason. Copyright and ownership can be a tricky subject in the zine community, and the concept of permission is not something that is always respected.

Occasionally I will share pictures of the inside to show off some art or an element I truly loved. You can always be assured that I have asked and been granted permission to share these pictures. It doesn’t matter if your zine is a single piece of paper folded in half or if it takes me three months to hear back on whether I’ve been granted permission; I will get permission or I won’t put up the picture. There are no other options.

I will always, no matter the type of zine or content held within, appreciate someone who takes the time and the postage to send me a zine.

Postage costs are difficult if not impossible to manage, and sending your zine out to a stranger can be both expensive and nerve wrecking. I remember this each and every time I open my post box.

I will never review a zine if the creator has asked me not to.

If a zine creator has asked me not to review a zine in advance (for example, if we did a trade), I will not put up a review.

Rental Inspection Eve

See? I am learning. I didn’t make firm plans to post on Tuesday or today because I knew my rental inspection (a mere 15 hours away, but who is counting?) would cause a lot of stress and anxiety. And here we are! No promises broken – though my own personal disappointment because how dare the world tear me away from my love of zines?!

I wanted to say thank you for your patience. With Wanderer’s long recovery complicated by a nasty cold and this inspection, I have been all over the place.

The epitome of this? This arvo I ran around doing errands for a bit and only fully realised in the middle of getting groceries that my knickers that were only a couple months ago too small are now too big. With a tight belt holding up my pants because they are also now too big, you can imagine the wonderful time I had completing my errands.

On that fun note, I’ll wrap this up. I’ll be back tomorrow post-inspection with a fresh new zine review for you. <3

No Mail Monday – Exhausting Days Ahead

Image found here

Alas, no mail this week, but after last week’s mail extravaganza, I’m still feeling all warm and fuzzy inside.

Last week I asked for your help deciding on a zine title. The poll is still open, if you’d like to weigh in. However, I’m fairly decided on the title (with the weight of the Twitter poll results thrown into the mix with these results). Funnily enough, it’s the title I’d decided on ages ago but suddenly got panicky about last week.

Weird ol’ Nyx brain strikes again.

On another note, if you have a ‘my first zine’ story you’d like to share, I’d love to include it in the aforementioned zine. 🙂

Things are a bit stressful around here. Wanderer had a small op – just a day surgery – but recovery is slow and painful. Moreso than either of us expected and in a way that leaves him fully occupied with recovering. Top that off with our upcoming rental inspection – a panic-attack inducing event that comes twice a year – and I am struggling to stay calm and relaxed. There’s always so much to do, and now there is a big ol’ load of things to do on top of that.

The silver lining is that all the work needing doing keeps me moving. With winter gearing up and gas an expensive luxury, keeping warm in other ways is a very good thing.

Well, as per always, there are many things to be done. I will leave things here for now and wish you all the best possible week ahead.
