The Zine Collector Podcast (And Video!)

Hello, zine friends!

Last week I announced my intentions to start a podcast, and this week, I finally made a little something! It’s a hello rather than a full episode, but I’ve already learned a few things to take into the first proper episode of the podcast.

I’ve been really nervous about the video side of things, but I decided to give it a go anyway. (I reserve the right to decide video isn’t for me later on, hahaha.) So here it is!

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yeV1sxXId28&w=560&h=315]

If you are looking forward to a podcast rather than videos, you can listen to it on The Zine Collector

(Sorry, I can’t seem to embed they’re audio player – yet.)

My head is still spinning a bit with the ‘am I really doing this?’ feelings, but this was a good little step into things. I am really excited to connect with people in a new way, though, as I’ve been enjoying podcasts and videos for ages.

So there we are! I’m going to work on getting the audio onto other platforms as well, so I’ll announce those as they pop up.

Thank you all for the encouragement you’ve given me and for soothing my doubts (which repeatedly rear up) through the whole process. Here’s to a good episode one to come soon!

New Zine Podcast: Poor Lass Zine!

Hello, zine friends!

I am very excited to let you know that there is a new zine podcast on the block:

The Poor Lass Zine podcast!

I’ve just listened to their first episode, and I think it’s so fun. The whole thing was very warm and inviting – two friends chatting about their zine series and such. I wanted to pour a cup of tea myself just listening. (C’mon Yorkshire Tea!)

It’s available on Soundcloud as well as on iTunes. (Sorry for not having the iTunes link – I’m not an iTunes user and don’t know how to get to it if I don’t want to sign up.)

Definitely check it out.

2018 Plans & Little Announcement

Hello, zine friends!

I hope this post finds you well and adjusting to the year. January 2nd is always a little weirder than the 1st because the glow is dying down, and the real work of the year begins. Small adjustments are already being made to keep those resolutions and whatnot.

For instance, I’ve come to see that I loaded a lot more on my plate than I realised, so it’s time to reevaluate things now before being burned out later.

It’s all a process, but enough of my prattling.

2018

It’s the time of year for plans, intentions, changes, so on and so forth. It’s also the time of year for creators – no matter what you create – to announce on various platforms what’s happening. While I don’t have a heap to report, I figured I’d join in and let you know what’s happening in my head.

*ZINES
– Don’t Call Me Cupcake: I’m taking a little break from Don’t Call Me Cupcake. Writing 9 and 9.5 was really intense for me, and I need to work on ‘lighter’ projects just for a little while.

– Dear Anonymous: Dear Anonymous 7 will be finished and sent out very soon. I apologise for the delay. I set dates back when moving dates were really flexible, and I forgot to adjust dates for the zine. At the moment, I just have to put everything together and then save the money to send the contributor copies.

– Paper Currency: I really want to focus a lot more on this zine this year. I’m still really excited about the idea and want it to be a great resource for zine people around the world.

– Missives From Murray Bridge: If you know what this is, no worries; it’s sticking around. If you don’t know what it is, that’s okay. It’s a silly little something I put together every now and then.

– Other zines: There are still a stack of zine ideas I’d love to make. I think by shuffling around a few priorities, I will be making a lot more one-off zines in 2018.

THE BLOG – I always want to be moving forward with things, but I feel like the blog is going well right now in the current way of doing things. Happy Mail Monday, reviews Thursdays and Fridays, calls for submissions and event announcements on the weekends. I like the rhythm of it, and it’s a workload I keep up with for the most part.

Ideally, I’d like to review three zines a week, but I’m really not seeing that happen. Not with what I’m announcing below. I also feel like that would be stacking things too heavily in that area. If I do anything else, I want it to be something fresh and different.

*OTHER PROJECTS – I haven’t forgotten what I was saying last year about starting an APA. I do still really love the idea of it, but there are a lot of logistics I need to work out before I can go forward with it. But yes, it is still on the cards.

I know. Not very exciting, but now you know where my head is at.

Now, for the little announcement…

Finally! Finally, finally, finally, I am starting my own podcast about zines!

I probably shouldn’t even be announcing this because I don’t have a firm start date (still waiting on some things to arrive in the mail and such), but I’ve been finding myself hiding behind note-taking and perfectionism due to the anxiety involved. I am absolutely terrified, but if I announce it, then it’s out in the world, eh?

I will have links for you as soon as I can get everything set up. (I had some hiccups trying to set things up online, but I’m slowly getting them sorted.) As much as I am scared, I am also really excited. Many people weighed in to vote about whether I should do this, and some of you even messaged me about your thoughts on the matter. I value your feedback, and it was lovely to know I’d have support going into this.

Anyway, that’s me for today and my plans for the year so far.

If you have any questions (perhaps questions for the FAQ section of the podcast?), thoughts, or requests for this blog, The Zine Collector, or anything else, please let me know. I’m always happy to hear from you.

Until next time.

200th Zine Review Celebration Awards: I Read a Zine, And I Liked It

Wonderful, beloved zine friends. I’m so happy to be creating this post.

It’s that time again – a time that probably isn’t familiar to a lot of you. When I reached my 100th review in May 2016, I felt inspired by the Golden Stapler Awards and celebrated by awarding zines with titles like ‘best binding’ and ‘funniest zine’.

(100th Zine Review Celebration Awards: All You Need is Zine Love)

I hit my 200th zine reviewed a few months ago, but with everything that was going on, I wasn’t able to get to things until now. I still wasn’t sure whether I would do this, but I do love sharing my zine enthusiasm and celebrating fun and cool zines.

Things to remember:

1. My apologies for any less than stellar photos.
2. This is only meant to be a bit of fun.
3. Zines often fit into more than one category. How they were sorted is all on me.
4. Keep in mind these are limited to the second lot of 100 zines I’ve reviewed – roughly from May 2016 to July 2017. You can find the whole list: Zine Review Index
5. Picking out the ‘best’ stinks. I love them all!

Let’s do this.

(I’m putting everything after a more tag because there are a lot of images.)

Sea Green Zines Holiday Plans 2017

Hello and happy holidays, zine friends. I hope things are calm and zen for you at a time when there can be so much to… not be calm about.

This post is more of an ‘in case anyone was wondering’ sort of post. I’m not sure if anyone is particularly curious, but here we are anyway.

With everything landing as it is, I think pretty much everything is going to stay the same save for Happy Mail being on Boxing Day or the day after. (If anything comes in within the next four days.)

Though both Wanderer and I are free of any commitments for the holidays, we do like to crash in front of the TV for a day of food, grog, and entertainment on the 25th. If there are any special requests for posts or anything like that, I’m happy to do whatever. Don’t be shy about asking whether it’s a question answered or a post on a particular topic.

I’m still planning on reviews as usual for this week. If I do take a rest from reviews, it’ll happen next week. But I’m really only saying that because I feel a little weird that I’m not really taking any time. Is that weird? Meh?

Wow. This is an even more relaxed post than I thought it would be.

Be sure to come back tomorrow for something special…

Important Notice Re: WeMakeZines.com

There’s been a hiccup over a WeMakeZines.com. Please read if you were/are a member there.

Hey Zinesters, I messed up … Bad. We had a spammer bulk message most everybody. I went to delete those messages in the database (the only way) because I didn’t want anyone, lame as the messages were, to fall for the scam. Despite selecting only the scammers messages it deleted all the messages. This didn’t seem like a problem because the server makes daily, weekly, and monthly backups.

So I imported what should have been yesterday’s database and was going to merge the messages into the current database. Only the import overwrote the current database and apparently the server hadn’t made a daily backup since March. While I make multiple backups they all rely on the initial ones the server makes being correct. So EVERYTHING that was is gone.

I’m pretty destroyed. I’ve worked hard on this site for months. I was really proud of what it had become. If you had signed up before you will need to sign up again (unless you were part of the beta testers). I’m so, so sorry. I’m rather distraught over this. It’s ultimately my fault for not making sure the backups were good. I apologize to you all and ask for another chance, this will not happen again.

Hello, friends. I won’t be doing a heap of these by any means, but I figure distros struggle a lot as it is, so why not spread the word. 🙂

Don’t Call Me Cupcake’s New Cupcake

Hello, hello, hello. It still feels weird not to be posting every day. I wonder how long that feeling is going to last. Haha.

With ZineWriMo done and dusted as well as a proper internet connection now in the house, I am catching up on things that have been on my to do list for a long time. One of those things is a new cupcake for the Don’t Call Me Cupcake zine series…

What do you think? Be kind; I’m not great at drawing.

I’ve been wanting to switch out the cupcake for a long time. The current cupcake is actually a stamp, and it makes me anxious that someone is going to rock up and tell me I can’t use it or something like that. (I know. Welcome to my anxious mind.)

I finally went for it, and I think it turned out pretty well for a handdrawn cupcake. I’m very happy to have one less niggle running around in my brain, that’s for sure.

My list is three pages long, so I’d better get back to it. I hope you are well and having a zine-filled time. I will be back tomorrow with a Thursday review.

PS. If you want to weigh in on something I’m thinking about, check out this poll on Twitter.

ZineWriMo is Coming!

Hello, zine friends!

The month of October is coming to a close, which means a big month ahead for many people. Why? NaNoWriMo, the event that challenges people to write 50,000 words in one month.

So what does that have to do with ZineWriMo? Well, according to the person who came up with it (as far as I know), Kat Mokus:

ZineWriMo is a new idea that came to me in wanting to combine the original NaNoWriMo and zines!

ZineWriMo is November! We focus on making one, or many, zines in November! Our only goal is to create zines, no word count requirement!

ZineWriMo is a fun, relaxed way to get into the zine making space with friends. There is a ZineWriMo Facebook group to help you connect with others, and the #zinewrimo hashtags on places like Twitter and Instagram if they are your preferred places.

Just to be clear, I definitely didn’t come up with the idea of ZineWriMo. BUT what I did do is come up with a little list of daily activities…

Ta da! I thought it would be fun to have daily prompts for any time you are feeling a little lost or unmotivated when it comes to getting your zine on in November. This is meant to be fun not stressful, so don’t get too wrapped up in accomplishing everything on every day. (But kudos and internet chocolates to you if you do.)

So there you have it! Share far, and share wide, zine friends. November is going to be busy!

New Zine Announcement: Paper Currency

Hello, zine friends! I am very, very happy to announce that Paper Currency is finally ready to be properly launched.

A zine for the love of zines. <3 Inside you will find zinemakers from around the world telling the stories of their first zines, zine reviews from yours truly, a section filled with fliers from zinemakers, distros, and more, and even an 'up for trades' section that you can join in on.

The recent price hikes from AusPost are a mood killer, that’s for sure, but I won’t let that stop me from keeping on keeping on.

Paper Currency is meant to be a free zine.

Unfortunately, you can’t offer things for free on Etsy, which is why it’s listed there for $1. If you do buy it on Etsy, the cost will go right back into Etsy fees, paper, and ink.

If you’d like to skip the $1 and pay only for shipping (and give Etsy the finger in the process), then you can get it directly from me.

Okay, so shipping is now $9 because Australia Post is insane BUT you can also whack more zines in there (up to 250g worth of zines) for the same shipping costs. There’s nothing I can do about the shipping, but I can at least get the most out of it.

I would have preferred a launch that included doughnuts, but what can you do? Read on, zine friends, and have a wonderful day!
