Full Disclosure: I wrote a piece for this zine.

A Good Place to Start #1 is a prime example of an ‘I wish I’d thought of that’ zine idea that I love so much I couldn’t possibly get jealous of Billy thinking of it before I did. 😉

This lovely zine is also a great example of how zines can introduce people to things they never may have encountered without them. AGPTS #1 is the music edition of what I’m hoping will be a zine series that will go on for a long time. It includes music recommendations from:

Australia
Spain
China
USA
France
England
Italy
Mexico

(Even though I was born in the US and don’t consider myself knowledgeable about music, Billy was more than happy for me to be the ‘Australia’ component for this zine.)

I absolutely adore the scavenger hunt-esque feel to this zine. There is enough written here that I can read the zine and enjoy it as a zine. But there is another whole step to it in that I can participate in if I so choose. I can go hunting on YouTube and find myself a new world of music that I would have never known about otherwise. Even better, Billy didn’t limit contributors to ‘punk’ or ‘classical’ or any specific genre. It’s all about the love, and that makes it even better.

(Yep, I’ve already told Billy that I need to be a part of the food issue. Haha.)

I know that a beautiful thing about zines and zine culture is the paper, cut and paste soul of it all. Still, I don’t think the internet has ‘ruined’ zines. I think zines that can embrace the internet in some way while still offering something to those who’d rather not participate in the online side of things are doing all the right things to welcome as wide an audience as possible.

I think this is an utterly fantastic idea for a zine series, and I hope I get to participate in future issues. This is the kind of zine series where I can really see needing to have each and every one as part of my collection.

Definitely get in touch with Billy if you’d like to participate – especially if your country hasn’t been represented. I’m not sure if he’s still working on it, but the next issue – Classic Movies from Around the World – might still be open for submissions!

Zine Review: Cute

Cute Zine by Fishspit and Serena Pruess

Cute

There is something intrinsically pleasing to me when my expectations of a zine are met by a different reality. A zine called Cute with a cute animal cover, and the first line is:

There I was…in that goddamned van.

I should have known, this being co-created by Fishspit. Haha.

As much as the title and cover may take you in, this is certainly not a zine of fluffy stories. The first line is telling, but the first story is dark with a short and fuzzy ending.

I imagine at this point that I might not be making a heck of a lot of sense, but this zine is hard to describe. The stories inside are a mixture of sweet and bizarre, a combination I wouldn’t have thought would work. They sit along a range of dark humour.

Fishspit’s distinct collage style adorns the interior covers, and Serena’s adorable art is on the cover and inside. Along with a couple photographs, this makes for a well-rounded zine.

I feel like I haven’t read enough of Serena’s writing, at this point, to give an opinion on it. Fishspit’s writing is strange and bizarre in strange and bizarre ways.

The combination? Well, I’d like to read more of that.

Happy International Zine Month – Days 17, 18, 19, 20, 21

http://giphy.com/gifs/rainbow-lol-gif-vomit-LwIw5RCH3hwGc

Yikes. I really let time get away from me this time, didn’t I? Time for five days in one post!

Day 17: Review a zine online or write a review to share.

Hehe. This wouldn’t exactly be a new thing for me, would it?

You can check out my Zine Review Index, now with over 100 reviews linked. I haven’t updated it in a few weeks, but that will be happening soon.

If you reviewed a zine for IZM, review zines on a more regular basis, or fall somewhere between, leave me a link in the comments!

Day 18: Order from a different zine distro than normal.

Somewhere other than Sticky?!

Actually, there are heaps of distros around the world that I would love to order from. Google zine distro, and away you will go. There are also heaps of shops on places like Big Cartel, Store Envy, and other places like that. However, when I’m not after something specific and want to browse, Etsy is my go-to.

Etsy

With nearly 2,000 individual listings, I think it’s a good place to have a look around if you can’t walk into a brick and mortar.

PS. I will get a lot more distros listed in the sidebar as soon as I have time.

Day 19: Zine Shop appreciation day!

Day 20: Free Zine Day!

Looks like I was a bit early to the punch with my zine giveaway post. Oopsie.

Day 21: International Zine Library Day! Visit your local zine library.

Aw, I don’t have one of these. At least, not one that I know of.

If you’re like me, you could Google image search ‘zine library’ and have a perv on the images there, or you can Google your town/state to find out if you have a local space.

If you do, let me know! I’d love to get a zine library list going.

Happy International Zine Month!

Done, Doing, Dreaming

Done

*I decided last minute to take yesterday off. Not the best decision, and certainly impulsive, considering I had to travel to Melbourne today. Oopsie.
*Medical appointments are finally done for the time being, which means I get to stop talking about it. 😉
*I’ve ordered a nice mic, a replacement part so I can actually use the mic on my computer, and some nice lights so I can (with luck and practice) take nicer pictures.

Doing

*Dear Anonymous 5 is still in the works, so feel free to send those letters.
*I’m working on a special issue of Don’t Call Me Cupcake for #5…
*I’m catching up with emails, likes, comments and such. This is what my tab bar looked like…

Catching Up

Dreaming

*I’ve been dreaming big about a badge making machine. Someday one will be mine, and Zine Ninja’s image will go worldwide!
*I’m still far away from actually podcasting, but I’ll be able to hit the ground running when I do start.
*I am looking forward to putting out a few new calls for submissions for zine ideas I have swirling around in my head…

Zine Giveaway Winners!

Last Sunday, I put up a giveaway for the chance to win a zine as part of the International Zine Month fun stuff.

Weeeeeell, you may have noticed the plural (winners) instead of the singular (winner) as part of the post title. Here’s why…

I’ve been struggling a lot with depression powered with a SAD battery pack. Add on the bad things happening in the world that I feel like I can’t do anything about, and you have a Nyx who is struggling to get out of bed every morning. Maybe it’s silly or strange, but this site, this community, and the larger zine community keeps me getting out of bed (eventually) to face the day. Sometimes I don’t even understand it, but I’m certainly not going to question it.

In amongst the face-off with the black dog, Wanderer and I have had some good things happen. Little things that won’t change the world but made our world a little brighter. It’s with those moments in mind that I realised that if I could send just one zine per envelope…

EVERYONE CAN WIN!

say what again

That’s right. 🙂 Everyone who entered the giveaway last week wins a zine. Sadly, only *a* zine, but I’m one of those people who thinks five people getting a dollar is better than one person getting five dollars and the other four getting nothing.

Shivani, Idle Emma, Jennifer Nichole Wells, La Rainbow Vomits!, and PixieP:

Please send your mailing addresses to theauthor@inkyblots.com

I will respond within 48 (usually closer to within 24) to let you know that your email made it through. If you have any troubles, comment here and let me know.

Congratulations!

Call for Submissions: Off Duty: An Overwatch Fanzine

Off Duty - Overwatch Fanzine

Off Duty is an Overwatch fanzine exploring the hobbies and pastimes of the Overwatch crew in their free time. Does Tracer use her blink abilities to snap the coolest mid-flight pictures ever? Does Soldier 76 put down the mask to pick up a watering can and a gardening spade? What shenanigans does everyone get up to when they’re given some time to rest and relax? Come find out!

If you’re an artist interested in participating, please fill out this form by July 20th! Depending on the response, we’ll either have one artist per character or two artists per character; please do get your submissions in and we’ll let everyone know the plan as it develops!

We are going to have digital copies up for sale for sure, and depending on interest and pre-order numbers, we can possibly do a print run! Pre-orders will start sometime in early September. Prices, what’s happening with printing and other relevant things will be coming soon, so keep checking back for more information, and if you have any questions, please do shoot us an ask here or email us at offdutyoverwatch@gmail.com!

Zine Community Crowdfunding Spotlights

I’m doing something a little bit different today because I’d like to feature a couple of zine community crowdfunding projects. If we don’t support each other, who will?

ZICS

There’s only 24 hours left, at the time I’m posting this, and Pozible is an all or nothing crowdfunding site. They’re so close!

ZICS is a not-for-profit collective of passionate volunteers dedicated to connecting local zine and indie comic creators with the wider public. We strive to start inclusive conversations, collaborate on ideas, and share the art forms that we love.

We’ve been working hard since March to make this year the biggest ZICS yet, and now we need your help. As a not-for-profit group, we rely on your generosity to make this event happen. That’s where the Pozible campaign comes in. By pledging just five dollars of your hard-earned cash, you’ll be supporting Brisbane’s largest gathering of zine and indie comic enthusiasts.

[vimeo 174001842 w=425 h=350]

Our project is centred around multi-media artist Ana Hine, as she navigates making and distributing her feminist arts zine Artificial Womb around Scotland.

It will explore her experience of dropping out of the mainstream media, due to work-related stress, depression and anxiety, and the role zines are having in her recovery.

The film will touch on:
zines and DIY culture
feminist arts scenes
mental health & employability
We would like to showcase the work of other zine makers who have had similar experiences with mental ill-health. If you’d like to be featured (and are within driving distance of Glasgow and/or Dundee) get in touch!

Happy International Zine Month – Days 15 + 16

I know. I said I’d put up two reviews yesterday, but I just couldn’t do it. It might not really matter, but I love to let each zine review have the day to itself.

Eventually I will experiment and see if it actually matters…

On with International Zine Month stuff!

Day 15: Leave a zine in public for someone else to find

Day 16: Send your zine to a distro for consideration.

I wish I had some pictures of a grand, sneaky zine drop somewhere local, but, alas, I do not.

More reason I should look ahead on the IZM day tasks and, you know, plan. Oopsie.

The second task is actually a little funny in that I have been trying for the past couple of weeks to make copies of all my zines to send to Sticky Institute. (Or drop them in, should the timing ever finally work out to be right.)

If anyone is participating in IZM and blogging about it, please let me know! I’m making a bad show of it. 😉
