Happy… Day?

Hello, hello, and hello once more, zine friends!

It’s been quite the silly pickle of a life here at the zine cave of late, that is for sure my dear friends. Then again, I’d rather have fun and give things a go than sit back and not over the mere possibility that I might fail. I mean, trying and failing is kind of what I do around here, but I have an absolute blast doing it. My only regret for this one is that I didn’t give you all the amazing zine reviews I wanted to.

But I can promise you one thing – there will be another month of zine reviews in the future.

This week has seen no mail but email variety come in, so there’s no happy mail video for this particular Monday. However, the day was beautiful and sunny, progress has been made on the aforementioned silly pickles, and there are silver linings to be found.

So here we are, friends. Another day, and a thought to share with you… It’s always hard to fail. It’s hard to lose track and get behind. But keep trying. Keep giving all you can. Because even failures and be beautiful and fun, and they make the successes all the more wonderful.

Until next time…

Call for Submissions: Not a Boy

Not a Boy is a zine for genderqueer/non-binary/trans amab people who feel like standard narratives of trans woman experience just don’t fit.

My name is Clarissa and I’m a non-binary trans woman, which for me means that estrogen et al. make me feel for comfortable in my skin but I still don’t “feel” like a woman or even know what that would mean. I didn’t “always know” I was a woman, didn’t long to wear dresses as a child, and only like men in a really gay way. Years ago the only conclusion I could come to is “well, I’m not a boy…” I’ve met other amab people and trans women with similar feelings and stories about gender but I’ve never found a collection of us talking about this. So why don’t we make one?

So I’m looking to hear from other amab people with a variety of experiences with gender, self-perception, and sexuality. Give me your essays, your thoughts, your gender manifestos. Send in your art or comics that capture how you feel. Write the words you would have wanted to hear when you were a kid or what you wish you could say to every person who asks some crass variant of “what…are you?” And if you’re not sure if this zine is for your story, it probably is!

All contributors will get PDF both versions suitable for screen-reading and printing so that you can sell your work if desired.

I’ll be accepting submissions until the end of September. You can email them to clarissa.littler@gmail.com Hope to hear from you!

Zine Review: Some Of The Reasons Being An Adult SUCKS

Some Of The Reasons Being An Adult SUCKS

Some Of The Reasons Being An Adult SUCKS is a full colour A7 mini-zine about, well, some of the reasons being an adult sucks.

I do try to read zines in some sort of order resembling that which they arrived in, but sometimes a zine just speaks to what I’m dealing with in life, and I simply have to read it.

Some Of The Reasons Being An Adult SUCKS has a self-explanatory title. Inside you find small snippet reasons pasted onto alternating backgrounds. Listing reasons from your standard ‘doing dishes’ to more complex ones involving expectations, Crash really hits things right on in their usual style.

I did feel a bit sad reading this zine because it’s clear even in this mini how much people cause each other hurt by mere expectation of behaviour. I wish we could all just be a bit kinder to each other. As Australia looks at another postage rise in October, I also was right with Crash with being annoyed with pretty much everything to do with bills.

I think minis like this are important because it’s always, always nice to know you’re not alone. Even if it’s something you more or less know other people feel (no one actually likes bills, do they?), it’s still nice to see it acknowledged.

So get your nod on with another oh-so-true offering from Crash Reynolds.

Hello, zine friends! I’ve made some lemonade out of some recent lemons and spent some recovery time finishing two zines that I’m very proud of! Check out all the goodness.

As always, thank you for watching.
