#ZineWriMo Day 14: WIP Wednesday

It’s already Wednesday, and we’re already nearly halfway through the month! How did that happen?

Work on your work in progress

Today was absolutely full on with various appointments and whatnot, so I’m afraid I don’t have anything new to report on the zine front. I’d rather not show you repeat pictures of Dear Anonymous 8, so here we are. I do have a picture to share – of a very naughty dog who will still sook with the best of them for some treats even when she’s been naughty.

I hope that makes up at least in small part for the lack of anything exciting. Haha.

#ZineWriMo Day 13: Progress Pics

Hello, hello, hello. Today has been a day of catch up for me, but being in that work focus mindset has been good. I’ve accomplished a lot. Phew! I even managed to finish one of the comp zines I’ve been working on, so big plus there!

Progress Pics: How are your WIPs going?

Dear Anonymous 8 is printed and folded! Woohoo! The sewing will still take me a little while, but I am very happy to have at least one of the zine goals I set at the beginning of the month finished (well, except for the sewing) already. Upward and onward!

#ZineWriMo Day 12: Fanzine

Hello, zine friends! Well, I made it to day 12 before I fell behind with the prompts. Haha. Not too shabby. I had an appointment that involved a bit of a road trip, and I didn’t have it in me to make a fanzine when I got back home. However, I did putter away with yesterday’s prompt this morning.

Make a Zine: Make a fanzine

I decided to make a fanzine about one of the first – if not the first – zine I ever picked up on Steam. I’ve been playing it since the very early days (2013) and have absolutely loved it. Even though I’m really bad at it. Haha. It’s Don’t Starve!

If you want to see a video of me flipping through the zine, check out my Instagram account.

This is not a zine I will be reproducing because I don’t have any rights to any of the art. Maybe if I can up my drawing skills in the future, I will come back to it. For now, it was a fun exercise, and it was nice to think about all the reasons I love Don’t Starve.

#ZineWriMo Day 11: Favourite Zine Tools

Hello, zine friends! Is it the end of the weekend already? Nearly so in this time zone. I am enjoying a beautiful end to a lovely weekend weather-wise, though, so I certainly can’t complain.

For today in ZineWriMo…

Sharing is Caring: Show off your favourite zine tools

I’m afraid for today you get a little repeat of yesterday. These are the ‘tools’ that I use most by far.

My washi tape collection is a favourite go-to of mine because it can add beautiful elements to any page with ease. There are so many different patterns and shapes – and there are always more out in the world if you don’t happen to have what you’re looking for on hand. I also use washi on zine mail as well, so it gets all kind of use (and I go through a lot of it).

The tool(s) I use even more than washi? Embroidery thread and a needle. I like the sew the binding of my zines and consider the green thread to be a sort of ‘signature’ for Sea Green Zines. I didn’t start out doing it with that in mind, but that is the fun thing about some traditions – they sneak up on you.

What are your favourite zinemaking tools? I imagine there are more than a few favourite staplers out in the mix. Let me know in the comments.

#ZineWriMo Day 10: Zinemaking Supplies

Hello, zine friends, and a happy ZineWriMo day 10! Today is a day for headless chook mode around the zine cave with heaps to do and never enough time to do them. Still, I have been poking away at my various zine projects and was lucky in that today’s prompt didn’t take very much time at all.

Organise your zinemaking goodies

When it comes to me and the zine cave, I’m reminded of my beautiful dog Zenna and her bed. Most of the time, it’s absolutely fine. But every now and then, she decides it’s still not quite right and fusses with this or that until she finally settles down.

Well over a year since I’ve moved, I’m still fussing, poking, and prodding at various things, trying to create an ‘ideal’ workspace (whatever that will end up being). But it worked for me today in that I’ve already packed up all my zinemaking goodies.

I’ve somehow managed to accumulate a huge amount of washi tape that I put into a clear bowl-thing that I actually won at the pub ages ago. My zine sewing supplies are also nicely packed all together (though there isn’t really much to pack) in a green box so neither needles nor thread wander away from me.

What’s not pictured (because I forgot and now don’t have the light for it) is the one cube on my cube shelf reserved for the scrapbooking paper I use for backgrounds in some of my zines. I have a few 12×12 pads and quite a few 6×6 ones of all sorts of different patterns because I also make cards.

And now that you know more about me than you wanted to… Haha! Let me know how you keep your zine making goodies all nice and tidy. Or do you keep them in different ways? Does tidiness take away from the creativity? Let me know in the comments.

#ZineWriMo Day 9: NaNoZine!

Hello and happy Friday, zine friends! I’m glad it’s Friday. While it doesn’t have the same connotations for me as a lot of other people, I still enjoy it. Even moreso because it has been a beautiful and sunny day here at Murray Bridge.

Onto today’s prompt!

Make a zine: NaNoZine! Make a zine full of words

Because November is also National Novel Writing Month, I originally decided to turn chapter one of my novel into a mini-zine. However, the more I got to thinking about words in general, the more I started thinking about the quotes I’ve collected.

Yep. I collect quotes.

Whether I’m passing by a stranger and they say something that stands out to me or a friend says something I just *have* to write down, I enjoy ‘collecting’ quotes and have done so for years. Yes, years.

With that in mind, I decided to make this mini:

This mini features some of the quotes from my collection because why not? Words are funny things, and I enjoyed making this – even the little doodle backgrounds. I’ll be uploading a short video on my Instagram account as soon as I post this in case you’d like to take a peek a the inside.

How’d you go with the ‘zine full of words’ prompt?

#ZineWriMo Day 8: Stream of Consciousness Writing

Is it the weekend yet? Haha. Hello, zine friends, and welcome to another day of ZineWriMo where we get our zine on in a fashion inspired by National Novel Writing month. (But with somewhat less work involved because the activities list was made by a spoonie.)

Warm Up: Try stream of consciousness writing

I think I first started stream of consciousness writing when I was in high school and the composition teacher seemed really big into journalling, writing every day, so on and so forth. While I certainly didn’t keep up the ‘every day’ part of it, I did (and do) find it a useful tool right alongside things like brainstorming.

Sometimes the things that come aren’t are far from pretty, but I’ve always viewed that as a sort of purging. Get the muck out of my brain and my heart and onto the paper where it can’t keep creating clouds in my view. A shower of literary sorts. Haha.

My ideas notebook catches all things zine-related, so my writing went right on in there along with everything else. However, given that it’s of a personal nature at points, I’m afraid you get another picture of the cover of my ideas book.

Do you do stream of consciousness writing? Is today your first time? Let me know all your thoughts about it – even if you really don’t like it! – in the comments and/or by linking to your post about it.

#ZineWriMo Day 7: WIP Wednesday

Hello, zine friends! I don’t know about you, but this week feels like it’s whizzing by to me. I keep thinking it’s Tuesday. Haha. I was very happy to discover that it’s Wednesday, though, as today’s prompt is…

Work on your work in progress

Work day!

This isn’t a very exciting screenshot, but I create a lot of my zines using InDesign. It’s a program I absolutely adore but also one that I got quite a few years back with a hefty student discount – so probably not one you’d like to go for if you’re starting out.

Anyway, this is the first look at the bare bones of Dear Anonymous 8. From here, I’ll plug in all the text, and then I will start picking the fonts, the ways to present the text, and the backgrounds for each letter.

I’ll also be setting up more of the ‘bones’ for Workaholic and Umbrella 2.

What are you working on today? I’d love to know. Be sure to leave a comment below and check out the other people who are joining in.

#ZineWriMo Day 4: Connect With Others

Hello, hello, zine friends! I hope you’ve been having a wonderful weekend so far. Today we’re rounding out the weekend with a ZineWriMo prompt all about saying hello.

Sharing is Caring: Connect with other zinemakers

One of the greatest joys I’ve found in being involved with zines is meeting amazing people. There are so many making zines all around the world, and it’s my pleasure to know them. But I also know that getting to know people online first can help a lot when it comes to social anxiety.

Thank goodness we have online zine groups!

As I mentioned in my first post, ZineWriMo has a Facebook group as well as a Twitter hashtag ‘group’(?) going.

There are also other groups as well. The website We Make Zines, and a couple of other Facebook groups as well: Zines A Go Go and Zines Australia.

Even more? Well yes!

At the bottom of each ZineWriMo post, I have a list of participants. You can always say hello on those spaces as well.

Participants:

*Echo Publishing
*Riot Grrl
*Ulterior Zines
*Olga Writes Things
*Zines and Things

If you would like to be added to the list, you can let me know by DMing me your link on Instagram or Twitter, or you can email me.

Phew! I think I’ll leave it there for today. If there are any spaces, places, or participants I’ve missed, be sure to let me know. I also have a Resources page if you’d like to check that out.

#ZineWriMo Day 3: Make Mini-Zine Blanks

Hello, hello, and welcome to day three of ZineWriMo! We’re on our way now, zine friends. Today we have a bit of a prep day for things to come later in the month.

Make mini-zine blanks

I got my very first papercut of the month folding these lovelies, but I am all set. You’ll need seven if you want to make each of the ‘make a zine’ prompts for the month (eight if you’d like to make a ZineWriMo zine about the whole experience).

I’m a ‘production line’ kind of mind, I suppose you could say, so when I’m making more than one thing, I like to do all of step one, then all of step two and so on. I don’t think it makes it any more or less creative. For me, it’s more so because then the blank canvas is already prepped and ready to go. I only need to think about the art.

But maybe I’m thinking about the whole thing a little too much. Haha.
